Missouri, believe it or not, is home to some of the best sweetest tasting wines in the Unite States. Napa Valley does not yet have a monopoly on wine like this, and that is a good thing. Missouri wines may be the nation’s best kept secret so far, but as soon as those holidays come up, you can be sure you will see the names of Mount Pleasant, whose winery celebrates 150 years this year, and Peaceful Bend. If you are looking for that perfect wine for the holiday season, look no further, because chances are it appears on the list below:
Ten Bucks. This is an appropriate name for a sweet white wine that costs the same amount as its name. Made at the Mount Pleasant Winery, this wine has a delicious aroma of candied fruits including lemon, orange, and apple. The sugar level alone is 10%, making this one smooth, creamy wine. This can be paired with lots of holiday goodies from marzipan to fruit slice candy and chocolate truffles. This is definitely a party wine, so it’s worth getting several bottles to serve at your holiday parties. Available from Mount Pleasant for $10.00, of course.
Almond Tree Red 2000. Two words that describe this red wine: sinfully rich. Made on the Bommarito Estate Almond Tree Winery in New Haven, Missouri, this is a semi-dry wine with aromas of cherry, blackberry, and raspberry. That’s a vibrant fruity combination if you ask me. The wine has a creamy taste to it so you’ll feel like you’re eating one of those fruity candies with a creme center. Again, this is perfect for the holiday season right around the corner. Be ready to serve lamb chops or sirloins at your holiday dinner party. Available from Bommarito Estate Winery for $19.99.
Courtois Premium Dry Blend. This dry white wine uses only 100% Chardonel grapes in the making. Made on the Peaceful Bend vineyard in Steeleville, this has a crisp favor with the added aromas of peach and apricot that will make you think you are drinking the freshest fruits ever grown in the Midwest. Pair this with a salmon steak marinated in lemon juice. Available from Peaceful Bend for $11.00.
Stark’s Star. Here is another dessert wine made from a grape of the same name that has been cultivated in the Meramac Vineyards of Saint James since the 1880’s. The color is a rich red with berry aromas. Some suggested pairings include: chocolate pudding cake, petit four, cherry creme. Available from Meramec Vineyards for $19.95.
2006 Joie de Riviere. Straight from River Ridge Winery in Commerce, Missouri, this red wine is made of two different Cabernets, Sauvignon and Franc, with Merlot and Malbec added. You will enjoy this strong fruity wine, which will find favor with a lamb chop lunch. Available from River Ridge for $24.00.
