This is the time of year where our memories are precious and we want to capture them all on film. Digital cameras are wonderful they take all the guessing out of settings and have some wonderful features. As your families gather to celebrate the holidays this year you can use these easy tips to ensure perfect pictures.
1.) Be Prepared
You may think that this tip is a given but I have had times where I am having a great time taking photos and my batteries ran dead. So before Thanksgiving arrives I check my camera to be sure its clean and working properly for the holiday season. Now I use rechargeable batteries so I always charge them the night before our holiday celebration. If you use regular batteries always pack extra, you know the saying better safe than sorry.
2.) Time Outdoor Photos Correctly
If you are wanting to take some of your Thanksgiving or Christmas photos outside choosing the right time of day can really effect how your photos look. Early in the day before noon or in the late afternoon are great times for family photos. The sun is low in the sky at the times and will make the sky more attractive and stop harsh shadows from showing up in your pictures. Of course if you are wanting to capture all the holiday lights, or if its New Years Eve you will need to set your camera to night or lowlight and get your photos at dusk or later.
3.) Photograph Subjects At The Right Time
Children can be unpredictable and at times make it hard to get a perfect photo. It is a good idea to try to take photos of children early in the day before they are all wore out from the festivities. Also later in the day they will be too preoccupied with all the Christmas gifts the received. And little babies are usually best to photograph right after napping or eating when they are content.
4.) Try Different Kinds of Photos
Most people try to pose everyone or put them in matching dressy outfits for holiday photos. Some of the best photos are the ones that are not planned but candid. For Thanksgiving you could get the children making crafts, or the grandparents napping after a big meal. At Christmas instead of fancy clothes you could do like our family does and get everyone in their pajamas. New Year’s Eve is the perfect time to get everyone acting very silly during all the festivities. You might also try out some of your different cameras setting like sepia or black and white photos. They can make your photos look timeless and unique.
5.) Take Extra
This is another very simple tip, but always be sure you have taken enough photos. Digital camera memory cards hold so many photos you will be able to capture all the holiday photos you could want. You can sort through them later it is better to have extras just in case some don’t turn out how you would like.
With the holidays being so busy and hectic taking perfect photos is the last thing you have time to worry about. By using these hints and just having fun you will end up with some great Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s photos to enjoy for years to come.
