For as long as I can remember, I have loved to read and I love to share my joy of reading with people who are important to me. The Christmas season is the best time of year to share my love of reading for so many reasons. Christmas is a time of gift giving and books are wonderful gifts that keep on giving. Books are easy to send, whether you buy them and ship them or find them on-line (there are tons of websites where books are available) and have them gift-wrapped and sent directly to your gift recipient. Winter is a great time of year for curling up in front of the fire with a nice cup of hot cocoa or chai tea and allowing yourself to be transported into a different time and place with a good book. This article looks at some of my favorite books about Christmas to give as gifts this Christmas season to loved ones.
Secrets of a Christmas Box by Steven Hornby. My favorite part of this book is that it is a fantasy novel. It has all of the trappings of the Christmas season but it involves a snowman and his quest to find his lost brother. The author’s use of the words we associate with the Christmas season really brings the book alive. “Secrets” is a book that is divided into chapters and is easy to read so it will make a perfect gift for a new reader, for someone looking for a book that is light and rejuvenating, or as a book to read to children as they fall asleep in the days before Christmas. You and your family will love this beautiful story.
The Christmas List by Richard Paul Evans. If you like A Christmas Carol, you will love this book. If you have a heart, you will love this book. If you have ever thought about your own mortality and wondered what sort of legacy you will leave, you will love this book. I don’t think this book has had a single negative rating. The premise is that a tough businessman reads his obituary and sets about dealing with the ramifications of how he reacts to what the world really thinks of him. Mr. Evans is a fantastic author and you won’t regret this purchase.
Penny’s Christmas Jar Miracle by Jason F. Wright. Mr. Wright has written a novel that has moved adults all over the world (Christmas Jars) and now he is bringing this life-changing storyline to a children’s book. Penny and her family save loose change all year long and then decide who to give the money to at Christmas. This book will help your children see the value they have and the power to help people in need. This is a favorite book for gift giving at Christmas and you will put it on your list this holiday season too.
The Paper Bag Christmas by Kevin Milne. This book is a great story about the conversion people often go through when materialism meets people in need. The author really brings you into the story as he shows you how two young boys learn to make a difference in people’s lives and not take so much for granted. Whether you are buying a Christmas gift for a younger or older person, everyone will love this book.
The Christmas Hope Series by Donna VanLiere. This series started with The Christmas Shoes, and includes The Christmas Blessing, The Christmas Hope, and The Christmas Promise and it is the most wonderful Christmas series out there. The first book is associated with a wonderful song that pulls at the heartstrings. There is a common thread throughout all of the books and it is worth every penny to buy all of Ms. VanLiere’s books. They are definitely among my favorite books to give as gifts at Christmas.
