Really expensive and high-quality cameras are needed in order to take quality photographs. However, if all the photographer has to work with is a digital camera, a photo editing program like Photoshop can edit grainy images and make them appear as if they were taken by professional photographers. All that is needed to fix photos is a knowledge of how the filters and blending modes work. For those who do not want to take the time to learn the nuances of Photoshop, a specialized plugin is available.
Load the grainy photo into photoshop.
Find the layers panel and right click on the background layer and click “duplicate layer.”
Click on the top layer on the layers panel.
Click on the blending mode drop-down menu and select overlay.
Click on the opacity slider and slide the opacity left and right until you like how the contrast looks on the photo.
Go to layer, new adjustment layer and then levels. Click on “auto.” Play around with the shadow and highlight sliders until you are happy with how the image looks.
Click on the background layer on the layers panel. Then go to the top of the screen and click “filters.” Find “noise” and click “reduce noise.” Play around with the slider until enough noise has been removed to where the image looks better.
Go to image, adjustment and then hue/saturation. Play around with the hue slider until the colors really pop out.
Download the Imagenomic Noiseware Professional plugin. Extract it.
Find the folder that contains Photoshop. Move the Noiseware Professional plugin to the plugins folder within the Photoshop folder.
Click “filters,” hover the mouse over Imagenomic and click Noiseware Professional.
Click “okay” to run Noiseware Professional. Play around with the settings until your image looks attractive.
If there is a part of the picture that is darker than the rest, select this part of the picture with the lasso tool and change the contrast individually.
Make your image look even better by using the rule of thirds. Divide your picture up into 9 boxes of equal size. Where the lines that make up these boxes intersect, crop the image in order to place the most important objects in your image there.
Be sure to save your work often in order to avoid losing your work. As of 2009, Photoshop does not have file recovery software.
