The first major preseason college football poll has just been released and four teams from the Pac 10 are in the top 25 of the teams on the list. The 2009 NCAA USA Today Coaches’ Top 25 list, available at ESPN.com, starts with the obvious team at #1, the Florida Gators.
Pac 10 college football fans want action and competitiveness in their conference and the 2009 NCAA college football season is likely to bring plenty of intensity, for sure.
# 4: USC Trojans
Many consider the University of Southern California Trojans to be the best college football team in history, in terms of total wins and championships. With Pete Carroll at the helm, they have been truly dominant over the last ten years, with national championships in 2003 and 2004.
Can the Trojans come back to their dominant form or will they let the Florida Gators run away with another championship? We’ll have to wait and see. The Trojans lost just one time in 2008 but that was enough to knock them out of playing for a national title.
The Trojans open their season at home on Sept. 5 against lightly-regarded San Jose State, which USC better win by a high margin if they want to impress anyone.
# 12: California Bears
The Bears look to improve on their overall record of 8-4 in the 2008 season. They certainly have an excellent shot at doing that. Their first game is at home against Maryland on Sept. 5.
The Bears added potential Heisman candidate Jahvid Best who could throw some serious heft into the Cal running game. All the Bears need is for their receivers to have a great season. If that happens and Best plays really well, the Cal Bears could give the Trojans a run for their money.
# 14: Oregon Ducks
The Oregon Ducks had only two losses in the conference in 2008 and finished with an overall record of 9-3 with a record of 7-2 in conference play. The Ducks finished second in the conference in 2008, behind USC.
Oregon has the unenviable task of starting their season on the road at Boise State on Sept. 3. Boise State is an exceptional football program, but if the Ducks can win there then that will be a big message to the rest of the conference that they are for real.
#25: Oregon State Beavers
The Beavers finished with an overall record of 8-4, with just two losses in the conference. They were just one win away from being co-champions of the conference and that is saying a lot because USC and Oregon had better overall records than the Beavers.
The Beavers are ranked #25 in the coaches’ pre-season poll. Though this is at the bottom of the list, this is still impressive because there are many, many college football teams in the country.
The Beavers open 2009 with a home game against Portland State on Sept. 5.
