The home décor plays a great role in the life of the individuals living in the home. In fact, every home is representing the people who live in it. Due to the recession and mass migration towards the cities, the average square footage of an urban home is constantly shrinking. Gone are the days when people had separate guest cabins or formal living rooms. This is an age of homes with ‘multi-purpose rooms’. A typical multipurpose room will be used as dining area, and as both formal and the informal living areas.
To the interior decoration pros, the overall situation does not allow much room to play. In this new age, the interior decoration must serve some function too, rather than just being eye candy. In this article, I will focus on the functionality and the décor that the folding furniture items can contribute to a place.
Creating space in small rooms
This is the most obvious purpose of the folding furniture items. In cramped living spaces, they provide a breathing space. I have a very small area for laundry, so I have kept a folding table there. I use it as a counter to iron clothes and when not in use, it is hung with the wall.
In the hopelessly tight entrance corridor, you can hang a couple of chairs for the family members to tie on their shoes laces before leaving for work. I did not have a room to create a separate baby nursery. So, I had to accommodate our baby’s cot in our bedroom. As the changing table, I am using a folding table.
Decorating a wall
The folded hanging furniture can look good too. In the market, tables with folding legs are available. You might also find a cheap one in the flee market. What you have to do is to paste a piece of art (which could be a photograph) on it. If you like a specific painting, you can download the replica from the internet and get it blown to the canvas. Paste the canvas on the table and you have a piece of art with a great base and frame.
For my living room, I got two of my favorite pieces of art blown to canvas. I mounted one of them on the wall, exactly where my folding table hangs. The other one is mounted on the folding table. The result: when the folding table is not in use, my favorite piece is displayed on the wall. When it is in use, two of my favorite pieces are displayed, one on the wall and the other one on the table!
The folding chairs can also serve the purpose of displaying art in your garage, attic or basement. If you think, the chair backs are too small to display art then just paint them in complimentary colors to the wall. I know a friend who painted the chairs orange to be displayed on the violet wall. If you want to be more playful then you can paint the chairs in two different hues, one for the legs of the chair and one for the rest of the chair.
Now, the last piece of advice for interior design pros living in small spaces: when buying something for the home, keep its functionality in mind. Then with a little imagination, it can be turned to a piece of interior design art too. I wish you all the best for that.
