When I was the proud owner of a rather lively Dalmatian some years back, the choke chain was “de rigueur” for boisterous dogs. Back then, what did we know about dogs except the basics, like food, water, and exercise? Nowadays, we’re more knowledgeable about the needs of our dogs and how pet owners can keep dogs safe, happy and healthy for a very long time.
Part of this knowledge is understanding the fundamental difference between a Gentle Leader® Headcollar and Harness products and the traditional choke chain for the lively dog and sporting breeds. I know from personal experience that Gentle Leader® leash training products work so much better than the choke chain and keep the dog safe and healthy as well.
Most experts agree that choke chains, pinch collars and electric shock collars are used by dog owners to rein a dog in or provide a quick solution to a dog pulling on the lead. The choke collar, in particular, has been used for some time with dogs that are oversized, aggressive or overly exuberant on walks. Dog owners are certainly not to blame. These devices, including the choke chain, have been long considered safe and effective for leash training. In addition, many dog owners came of age at a time in the 1960s and 1970s when these same devices, particularly the choke chain, were used extensively for leash training dogs.
Fortunately, a growing number of experts and consumers alike are beginning to see the negative effects of these leash training methods on a dog’s personality, behavior and health. Choke chains, in particular, can cause bruising of the trachea, larynx or esophagus. Or, worse.
Technological advances, combined with better understanding of dogs’ health and behavior, have resulted in better solutions for dogs and their dog owners. One of the best of these advancements on the market today is Gentle Leader’s® Headcollar which helps inhibit a dog’s instinct to pull, lunge, jump and bark while, at the same time, not causing your dog to choke. Gentle Leader’s® Headcollar fits high at the top of the neck and has a noose loop that fits comfortably across the base of a dog’s muzzle. When your dog pulls, pressure is applied to the back of the neck and bridge of the snout. Yet, a dog can eat and drink at the same time the dog is wearing the Gentle Leader®. Gentle Leader’s® Headcollar comes in all sizes and colors. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your dog adjusts to wearing this device, and how well your dog will walk with you while wearing the Gentle Leader® Headcollar. Of course, your dog will have to adjust to the device at the beginning. Once he does, you’ll be pleased at the results.
Gentle Leader® also has a Harness which is excellent for leash training Pugs, Pits, Golden Retrievers, Labs and other dogs. The harness has a ring in the front of the neck section of the harness which, again, makes walking and leash training your dog a breeze. Does your dog gasp when you pull on his leash? Does your dog try to drag you down the street? Gentle Leader® Harness completely solves this problem and helps the dog learn to walk and heel without struggle. I don’t know what my family would do without the Gentle Leader® Harness and other leash training products.
If you’re still using the choke chain for leash training your dog, you may want to consider switching to one of the Gentle Leader® products. Shop online for deals and discounts. Make sure you purchase the right size for your dog. Gentle Leader® products come with user guides and instructional CDs. You’ll be absolutely amazed at how Gentle Leader® products have taken the strain and struggle out of walking and leash training your dog.
