George O’Malley’s last episode of Grey’s Anatomy aired Thursday night. George O’Malley was one of the most beloved Grey’s Anatomy characters, but drama behind the scenes spelled doom for the character, and led to the exit of the actor that played him. For five seasons George O’Malley roamed the halls of Seattle Grace Hospital, and he was one of the best characters on the show. Played by T.R. Knight, he started as an intern, and had worked up to being one of most trusted doctors in the hospital. In the season finale last season he was working towards joining the Army to be a trauma surgeon, but fate intervened and the script was altered to let T.R. Knight leave the show.
The off screen drama stemmed from several incidents, the most important of which being a very public argument between Isaiah Washington and T.R. Knight. Washington had made some very insensitive comments about Knight, and it blew up when the creative minds behind the show didn’t act immediately. T.R. Knight and George O’Malley were able to finally make a graceful exit at the beginning of the Grey’s Anatomy sixth season as the characters on the show started to move on from their grief. It wasn’t so easy for all of the characters though, and many of the main players started taking on some new sub-plot stories.
Katherine Heigl is back as Dr. Izzie Stevens, despite rumbling and rumors that she wouldn’t be back on the show. She was revived even though she had a DNR notice, and that could come in to play later this season, but for now she is recovering from her cancer surgeries and living as an outpatient. Don’t forget that she was married at the end of last season to Alex Karev, and Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) gave them his trailer to live in while he lives with Meredith Grey. Dr. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) and Dr. Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) are also more serious now, with Sloan moving in to a new apartment right across the hall from Callie Torres, his old flame. It’s also clear that Dr. Christina Yang (Sandra Oh) and her beau are trying hard to make their relationship work, including going through in-depth therapy to help him with his war memories. Let’s also not fail to mention that Callie is moving out of Seattle Grace.
The new season of Grey’s Anatomy seems to be starting off on the right foot, but rather than a real two hour premiere, they meshed two episodes together to make it seem like that. They were both succinct within themselves, and it didn’t flow as well as the show could have been constructed if they planned ahead. It’s also going to seem weird moving ahead without T.R. Knight, but this is a medical show where people come and go, and that probably isn’t going to stop any time soon. It’s also going to be odd when Ellen Pompeo takes several months off from the show to have her baby in real life. Grey’s Anatomy is back though, and fans can now enjoy the lives of their favorite Seattle doctors once again.
