The Australian Antarctic Division reported that an iceberg measuring approximately 500 meters wide and 50 meters high is headed towards Australia. The sheer size is astounding since the iceberg measures in a over 12 miles long. The iceberg that is being called B17B and is twice as big as New Yorks Manhattan island. The occurrence is quite rare to have an iceberg drift so far north intact. The iceberg broke from Antarctica at least ten years ago and has been floating ever since. Scientists believe that when this iceberg makes contact with the Continental shelf it could cause mild tremors in Australia. Many wonder if this is a sign of global warming and climatic change.
It seems that everyone is hesitant to blame global warming on this rare occurrence. It does seem that there was a time in history when icebergs were often spotted by clipper ships in the 19th century before the threat of global warming loomed. This would seem to suggest that the event is truly not all that uncommon. However, the icebergs that these clipper ships spotted were not the monsters of today.
Two other large icebergs are currently heading towards New Zealand followed by smaller ice chunks.
Despite a few scientists stating that this huge iceberg is not a sign of global warning many are still skeptical. Global warming is a reality that has only lately been addressed by government officials. Even now the Arctic Ice shelf and Antarctic glaciers are continuing to melt at an alarming rate. In the last decade scientists at NASA have noticed a significant warming of the Ross Sea with huge icebergs breaking off. This is in direct relation to global warming. It would appear that climate changes in Antarctica seem to be far more direct and the overall result is the breakage of huge ice shelves with icebergs moving outward into the sea. This occurrence is becoming all too common in the world.
As much of America is enshrouded in a blizzard the idea of global warming seems far from many peoples minds but the reality is that the Earth appears to be in an upheaval with a vast array of unusual weather being experienced world wide. Currently Hawaii is experiencing what many consider to be the largest waves in forty years and others are stating that the waves may be the largest in history for this time of year. There is talk that a fifty foot wave is forecast today or tomorrow.
The world’s unsettling weather is all a sign of global warming and the transition that the Earth is currently experiencing. Extreme weather variations is actually a symptom of global warming as the world becomes more unstable. A study by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change cite that humans are the true cause of the planets warming. These findings drive home the fact that we each must be accountable for our own greenhouse emissions and only by drastically changing our lifestyle can the planet begin to slowly heal itself. This will also call for drastic government revamping to change each nation of the world before its too late.
The climate changes will inevitably turn more violent and severe. The hardest hit in the world will be third world countries who will suffer devastation by flooding, drought, food shortages, and other major weather changes.
Each of us simply needs to turn to our local news and view the worldwide climate changes that are occurring around us today to see that global warming is real. Each little event such as the high waves in Hawaii, blizzards sweeping across the US, and icebergs that measure twelve miles long breaking away to float north are a sign of the times and the dire straits that our world is currently in. Other events will likely manifest slowly over time with more and more sever occurrences. Scientists only hope that it is not too late to change the inevitable world shift that we are facing.
