Baskets make great gifts; however, pretty baskets can be expensive. On top of the purchase of baskets, you have to buy things to put into them. So, spend less money on the container and substitute clay flower pots for baskets. They come in various sizes so you have a choice. They don’t cost a lot and you don’t have to worry about one friend liking the other friend’s basket better. They all look alike.
After selecting the pots for your gift baskets, you paint a coat of sealer on them. Since clay pots are porous, this will stop them from absorbing so much paint. You then pick a color of paint and put several coats on each clay pot. I usually paint them in a neutral color so I can have some around already painted.
Now it is time to decorate them. If you enjoy painting, paint a design or a picture of some type on each pot. You can find pretty decals in any craft store that will also look lovely on your clay pot gift basket. Craft stores also have a large selection of wood cutouts that you can paint and glue to the pot for decoration. For example, you could paint and glue some wooden apples on a pot for a teacher.
You can use your clay pot gift basket just as it is, or you can add a handle to it. If you have a jigsaw, cut out a wooden handle and paint it. A grapevine wreath can be cut in half to make two handles. Shape the handles so they go down the side of the lip of the pot and sit on the top of the rim. You now glue the handles onto the pot. Do not try to pick up the clay pot by the handle. It is purely decoration, not for use.
Next, you will fill the clay pot gift basket with a little straw or some kind of filler, then put all the goodies on top. Pots can be filled with small packages of assorted cookies and sprinkled with small, individually wrapped candy. You can also use Styrofoam in the base of your clay pot. Then attach your friends favorite candy bars to sticks and put them securely into the Styrofoam. Tie some bows at the base of each candy bar. Add some artificial grass, Hershey kisses or other adornments and your gift basket will be complete.
If you don’t like the decals and don’t paint, just tie a large bow around the rim of the clay pot gift basket or paint it a pretty color and leave it plain. If you want, you can add a small ornament of some kind on the ribbon also.
For a dressy look, lay a small doily across the top of the filler and then fill up your clay pot. We have mentioned filling them with cookies and candy, but food items are only one of many items you can use in a gift basket.
For a child add some coloring books, crayons, balls and tablets with a little bit of candy, fruit or other goodies. Hand creams, sachets, potpourri and candles make nice arrangements for a gift basket. For a friend who loves gardening, why not put some new garden gloves, a small hand trowel, flower markers and some packets of seeds in one of your clay pot gift baskets. A DVD or movie pass and some bags of popcorn or nuts would be a good start for a friend who loves movies. If you know what colors the receiver of the gift basket has in their bathroom, put some pretty hand towels and some decorative soap in the gift basket. Use gourmet food items, coffees and teas, gourmet mixes and a mug as items for your gift baskets. Just think about the person you are making the gift for and then walk around the store looking for ideas. For one more novel idea, you may want to just put a pretty plant in the clay pot!
Let your creative juices run wild and have a great time creating personal gift baskets made with clay flower pots.
