“This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declared unto you, that God is Light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not the Truth.” 1 John 1:5-6
One of favorite sayings comes from a secular song – “Show me, don’t tell me.” The interesting thing about light is that if it is there you automatically know it. In a dark room, no one has to advertise when a light is turned on. One synonym light is used for is “Truth”, just as darkness is used for error or anti-truth. But while the Bible teaches God is Light, its important to know that not all “light” is of God.
Both the Old and New Testament mention Lucifer as being transformed into an angel of light, an attempt to pass himself off as something he’s not. This is true of every false cult leader and false teachers. Particularly hard to see is true “light” (truth) when it is mingled in with artificial, fake, or imitation light. Truth becomes muddy and distorted, allowing for error to seep in and ultimately to compromise the truth. This is the danger of a liberal interpretation of scripture that encourages compromising the Word of God in order to “reach the lost”. Soon, “Christians” are holding rallies, having concerts, and big celebrations without so much as even the mention of Jesus Christ (so as to not offend). In those, there is no Light.
Walking around in spiritual darkness is something God doesn’t want for His followers. Anytime something popular with the ‘world’ (those not saved) is mixed in with the Body of Christ (those saved) the Light is lessened, senses are dulled, and the blood of Jesus is looked to less and less. As John noted in the verse above, we are telling a lie if we claim to have fellowship with Christ while at the same time we’re walking around acting and looking no different than those on their way to hell. And this doesn’t even include those “believers” who never go to fellowship with other believers yet always manage to catch their favorite TV shows.
The Light, as strictly defined by scripture, is the gospel message of justification AND sanctification through exclusive faith in Christ and His completed work at the Cross. Anything more or anything less is not Truth (the Light). When the Psalmist wrote ” The Lord is my light and my salvation …” the light wasn’t a particular denomination. The scripture that reads “Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart” it wasn’t referring to a faith-based initiative or volunteer service overseas building water wells.
Taking spiritual Light to the world is the only way to bring about hope, salvation, and restoration. The only means by which God does this is through disciples of Jesus Christ; those called out of darkness themselves to be the reflective Light of Jesus!
