The last issue of Gourmet Magazine has been printed. Gourmet Magazine is closing its doors after almost 70 years of issues. The sad news that there will be no more issues of Gourmet Magazine shows the magazine as the latest victim of the ever-changing market place and economy. Gourmet Magazine had been reportedly struggling at retaining a high level of advertising revenues, and it looks like they have lost the profitability of producing the magazine. Coming from a family that enjoys reading Gourmet Magazine, this is sad news on the grand scale, and could force a change for many fans of the magazine that enjoy using it during the holidays.
In a news report that CNN posted about the closure of Gourmet Magazine, they interviewed a subscriber that had used the yearly November issue as part of their Thanksgiving tradition when it came to preparing meals. The man who was interviewed said that his family had always selected the featured meal and prepared it for their Thanksgiving dinner. They probably weren’t the only subscribers to use this method of cooking during the holidays, and it will be sad news for nearly all of the subscribers of the long standing magazine. Gourmet Magazine had always been one that could be expected to be seen on store shelves, and had quite a few subscribers, so this move will come as a shock to many readers.
Gourmet Magazine has been stated to have nearly one million subscribers, so it isn’t an issue of popularity, but rather that not enough advertisers were turning to the magazine anymore to sell their latest products. With several other magazine likes Every Day with Rachael Ray really soaking up the advertising money in the market, there isn’t the same amount of room that was once available to all of the magazines that used to be able to survive on store shelves. That makes this a sad day for readers of Gourmet Magazine, and it means that the last issue, currently schedule to be the November issue of Gourmet Magazine, will become a quick collectible to the many fans of the magazine.
70 years is a long run for any magazine in the marketplace, and those people that have enjoyed Gourmet Magazine should continue to look back fondly on their fallen magazine. It’s one of those magazines where past issues still hold value for their articles and recipes, and this is one of those households that don’t mind keeping some older issues around in order to be referenced at a later date. Gourmet Magazine also wasn’t the only one cut by the company, as they also decided to end production on Elegant Bride and Modern Bride as well.
