Recently, I had the opportunity to eat two different brands of vanilla ice cream in a short span of time. The two brands that I am referring to are Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream and Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream. I was very pleased with the flavor, texture and overall quality of both brands of ice cream. So pleased in fact, that I have decided to write a product copmparison review of the two items. Presented here, in an effort to assist the consumer, is one food writer’s product comparison review of Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream and Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream.
Taste / Flavor
Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream and Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream both offer very satisfying examples of vanilla ice cream. The vanilla flavor in each of these products tastes authentic and balances well with the other ingredients. Neither of these ice creams are too sweet, nor do they feature any aftertastes.
It would be very difficult for me to declare one of these products better than the other. I must admit, I am used to eating Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream and I think that it is a very good product. To me, the Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream does taste a little bit richer and thicker, but I actually think that Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream is just as good.
Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream contains 270 calories, with 160 calories from fat, per 1/2 cup (106 grams) serving. This product also contains 11 grams of saturated fat, 0.5 grams trans fat, 18 grams total fat, 120 mg of cholesterol, 70 mg of sodium, 21 grams total carbohydrates, 0 grams of dietary fiber, 21 grams of sugars and 5 grams of protein.
Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream contains 130 calories, with 60 calories from fat, per 1/2 cup serving. This product also contains 4 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 7 grams total fat, 27 mg of cholesterol, 60 mg of sodium, 15 grams total carbohydrates, 0 grams of dietary fiber, 15 grams of sugars and 2 grams of protein.
The containers of Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream and Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream that I recently purchased and are reviewed in this article are their one pint containers. According to the package labels, each of these products contains four 1/2 cup servings. Quite often, I wonder about the validity of serving sizes printed on various food products. These ice cream containers are a case in point. I don’t know about other people, but I find it almost impossible to eat just a half cup of any brand of ice cream. Realistically, I think that these one pint containers hold approximately three good – sized servings.
The texture offered by each of these brands of ice cream is pleasant and enjoyable. Both the Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream and Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream are smooth and creamy. The more I think about it, it seems as though the Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream offers a somewhat creamier texture. At any rate, both of these brands of ice cream are always a pleasure to eat.
The price discrepancy between Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream and Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream is usually quite wide. Normally, I cannot afford to pay the high regular retail price charged for Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream. The only time I ever purchase it is when it is on sale. When I recently purchased the one pint container of this ice cream at a Hartford, Connecticut CVS Pharmacy, the sale price was $2.50 per container.
Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream, on the other hand, is always very reasonably – priced. Usually, one pint containers of this product retail for approximately $1.29 – $1.59. Walgreens Pharmacies quite frequently feature sales on their ice cream varieties and the sale price of their pint – sized vanilla ice cream is often $.99c per container. I have been buying this ice cream for years and I still marvel at the low prices charged for Walgreens brand ice cream. To me, their ice cream is just as good, if not better than many other brands of ice cream.
Both Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream and Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream are packaged in standard, round, cardboard – type ice cream containers. Each of these products are easy to open and close and they each also feature an inner plastic freshness seal. The package labeling of Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream and Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream both feature all relevant ingredient and nutrition ingredient.
All things considered, both Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream and Walgreens Vanilla Ice Cream are delicious, high – quality products. There is a wide price discrepancy between the two items, but to me, their quality is
virtually identical. You might prefer one brand of ice cream over the other, but I can honestly and objectively recommend both of these products.
