Dressing up an existing throw pillow for Halloween is a simple and inexpensive way of decorating. These adorable and whimsical “Happy Halloween” throw pillow covers are very easy to create and can be used for many years to come.
For this project, you will need:
– One black zip up or button up throw pillow cover
– One existing throw pillow
– Ten inch square of bright green felt fabric
– Ten inch square of bright orange felt fabric
– Small square of black felt fabric for pumpkin or Jack-O-Lantern detailing
– Black thread
– Fabric marking pen
– Block letter stencils
– Pumpkin or Jack-O-Lantern shaped cookie cutter or stencil
– Three inch wide black or orange florist ribbon (NOT organza)
– Hot glue gun and glue sticks
– Newspaper or a large drop cloth
Place the bright green and orange felt fabric pieces flat on your work area. With a fabric marking pen, trace the letters spelling “Happy Halloween” onto the felt. For best results, alternate the orange and green letters. Use the pumpkin or Jack-O-Lantern shaped cookie cutter or stencil to repeat this process with the festive shape. Cut out all the letters and pumpkin image with scissors. Additionally, cut out any details for the detailing on the pumpkin or Jack-O-Lantern shape.
Use a hot glue gun with an extremely small dab of glue to adhere the black detailing onto the Jack-O-Lantern shape. Let the glue dry fully. With a needle and black thread, hand stitch around the each of the letter cutouts and the Jack-O-Lantern cutout about a quarter of an inch in. (This is merely for decoration and not to secure it to the throw pillow cover.)
With a hot glue gun, adhere the lettering and the Jack-O-Lantern design to the three inch wide black or orange florist ribbon. (This ribbon should not be see through.) Let the glue dry fully. Adhere the ribbon to the black zip up or button up throw pillow cover with hot glue. Again, dry completely.
Insert the existing throw pillow into the cover and secure close. At the end of the Halloween season, simply remove the pillow from the decorative cover.
TIP: Add as many cutouts as you wish, whether they be ghosts, witches, vampires, extra wording, or any other Halloween themed item you desire. Some craft supply stores even offer pre-made felt cutouts, which will save you time but are a bit more expensive than making your own.
