There was an interesting topic which I discussed with my colleague during our break sometime last week which I think most of us have probably asked at least once during their lifetimes.
The topic was so commonly asked yet the answers always remain varied and ambiguous. To each in his or her own eyes the meaning of happiness is different.
There was a study conducted about 3 years ago whereby researchers from Carnegie Mellon University had said that there is a link between happiness to one’s own good health and longevity. Simply put, the happier you are the longer you probably will live on this Earth.
Although no definite or conclusive findings were made after speaking to several hundreds of people over a decade, they realised people who are happy experience lower rates of chronic illnesses or pain.I think it can be safely said that the effect happiness has on our lifestyle and our health has been greatly understated. It has become so common in recent times to be depressed or upset over events or things in life which we rarely control. In many ways , people of today tend to forget that by simply being happy and remaining positive, they probably be able to achieve much more in their lives instead of being depressed, stresses or even suicidal.
In the above test, it was even stated that those people who were happy were actually more resistant to cold and flu viruses than those people who were in a negative state.
Another study which was actually conducted over a period of 20 years by a team of researchers from the University Of California at San Diego and Harvard University, participants were asked about their social networks. There were 5000 participants who took part in this study. It was discovered that those who were surrounded by at least one person in their peer group who was a happy person had a 9 % chance of actually feeling happy themselves.
It must be said truly that who we choose to surround ourselves in our lives is who we become. If we choose to surround ourselves with happy people, we will find happiness easily. If we choose to hang out with the depressed, then we will become depressed.
Happiness is like a bug that spreads. It should be a bug we welcome to every home in any part of the world. Happiness is something that we have to adopt to our lives on a consistent basis. I believe that when we adopt a positive attitude to our lives, it becomes easier to face adversity.
It can be said that it is extremely difficult to remain positive and happy during the worst times of our lives, but we must teach ourselves to smile during our trials and tribulations. We can only grow stronger from within and learn to overcome life’s greatest hurdles.
