I think one of my family’s favorite things about long road trips is the snacking that ensues. Knowing this, I always prepare the road trip picnic basket with the healthiest, yet tastiest, snacks I can find. I go for organic whenever possible. Here’s my top 10.
Trail Mix -There’s a trail mix for everybody out there. You can find healthier varieties with only fruit and nuts, or you can go a little crazy and find varieties with carob or chocolate pieces. Either way, the mix is always a hit in our car.
Almonds -These delicious nuts have a wonderfully mild, distinct flavor that never gets old. What’s even better, you can eat them by the handful guilt free due to the healthy fats they contain as well as their cholesterol lowering qualities. Go for the unsalted variety.
Carob or Dark Chocolate covered cranberries – Alright, just about anything with Carob or Dark Chocolate covering it is going to taste pretty darn good, but cranberries in particular are my family’s favorite. The best part about indulging them with such delectable treats is that I know they are highly nutritious to boot!
Carob or Dark Chocolate covered pretzels – For a crunchy treat to go with the cranberries, chocolate or carob covered pretzels are the perfect accompaniment. Just the right amount of salty and sweet.
Yogurt covered pretzels – If you or your companions are not the chocolatiest of folk, then here’s your alternative for covered pretzels. They’re still just as delicious and healthy as well.
Dried apricots – Dried apricots, or dried fruit in general, can be a great addition to any long car ride. Not only due to their tasty and healthy qualities, but also due to their ability to get things moving (if you know what I mean). After sitting in the same position for so many hours, your digestive organs can get a little sedentary. Dried apricots can be your tasty little friends in this area. Just don’t eat a whole bag in one sitting.
Popcorn – The best I’ve found is at Trader Joe’s and it’s popped in olive oil; it’s delicious! If you’re in an area without TJ’s, then the next best brand I’ve found is Smart Food popcorn and that seems to be at most big supermarkets. The great thing about popcorn is that it can really fill you up and yet not weigh you down; perfect for a long trip.
Blue Corn chips – The brand Garden of Eatin’ carries my all time favorite bag of blue corn chips. They’re always fresh, light, and crispy; perfect on their own or dipped in hummus!
Baby carrots with Hummus – The combination of these two is so satisfying, especially if you are a mid-east food lover. Throw in a few slices of pita bread and you’ve got a quick lunch ready in seconds!
Apple slices – There is nothing better than cleaning the palette with a few apple slices. Make them crunchy, organic, and you’ve got the mother of all healthy treats. Bon Appétit!
