A Christmas train is a great decoration for the holiday season. A candy train is a fun Christmas craft for kids. With only a few basic candy ingredients you can create a wonderful and delicious holiday decoration. You can make just the train’s engine and turn it into an ornament or you can create a complete train with engine and cars and make it a centerpiece.
For the engine you will need:
1 package of chewing gum (5 stick pack such as Wrigley’s Doublemint or Big Red)
1 roll of ring-shaped candies (Lifesavers)
1 foil-wrapped Hershey Kiss candy
1 wrapped square candy (Kraft caramel or square Jolly Ranchers, for example)
4 round peppermint candies (such as Brach’s Starlite candies)
Glue gun and glue sticks (or you can use double-sided clear tape)
1- 16 inch length of 3/8 in. wide red or green ribbon
For train cars you will need:
2 packages of chewing gum (5 stick packs such as Wrigley’s Doublemint or Big Red)
2 small boxes of raisins (1 1/2 ounces each such as Sun Maid)
16 round peppermint candies (such as Brach’s Starlite candies)
Assorted wrapped candies (such as Rolo’s, Jolly Rancher’s, Kraft caramels)
3 miniature candy cane sticks
Glue gun and glue sticks (or double-sided clear tape)
Place 1 gum package, 1 raisin package, 2 gum packages, and 1 raisin package in a row, spacing them about 1/2 in. apart. Glue ribbon down center of packages, keeping them spaced about 1/2 in. apart. Glue roll of Lifesavers onto first pack of gum, which will be the engine. Glue 4 round peppermint candies onto sides of each package- 2 on each package side, creating the wheels. To finish the engine, glue the Hershey Kiss onto the top of the roll of Lifesavers in the front. Glue the wrapped square candy onto the top of the roll of Lifesavers in the back. To finish the cars, glue assorted wrapped candies onto the remaining gum and raisin packages to make different style cars. For example, glue the 3 miniature candy cane sticks in a stack to resemble logs.
*Always remember to have adult supervision when using a glue gun. Even low-temperature glue guns get very hot.
*To make the engine into an ornament to hang on your Christmas tree, make a loop with ribbon, and glue the loop ends in between the gum package and the Lifesavers.
*If making a centerpiece, create a base to build your train on. Decorate a piece of cardboard to look like a train track, or simply cover it with paper. Having a base will make moving your train from one place to another much easier.
*Browse the candy aisle at your local store for different types of candies. When looking for candies, think about shape. Look for squares, rectangles, circles, shiny wrappers, etc. Jolly Ranchers, Wrigley’s gum, Starburst candies, Hershey’s Miniatures, Brach’s Starlite Mints, Rolos, Kraft caramels, Sun Maid raisins, and Hershey Kisses are all good options to start with. Let your imagination and creativity run wild.
