My family’s Christmas tree has had a variety of ornaments over the years, but the most special ornaments–the ones that make it onto the tree year after year–are all handmade. For those among use that point out that Christmas needs to be more personal and less commercialized, there’s no more simple place to start than with the Christmas tree, and creating and decorating ornaments is a great family activity that children and adults can share. Here’s a look at three easy and simple homemade ornament ideas.
1. Altering Existing Ornaments – The normal ball ornaments that you can buy for a Christmas tree are fine, but they’d look a lot better with a bit of simple personalization. Try getting out some glue, glitter, and maybe even family portraits. Have kids decorate the ball ornaments in whatever way they’d like; encourage them to put their name and age on the balls, and you can make this into a fun Christmas craft tradition that eventually will give you a sort of ornamental holiday yearbook of the kids’ Christmases.
2. Birch Branch Reindeer – Here’s a Christmas craft idea from AllFreeCrafts.com. It’s a little reindeer ornament made from small tree branches. Using a fairly thick branch, cut a section for the body and another section about 1/3 of the size of the first for the head. Use craft glue to attach dowel for the legs and neck, and two small twigs for antlers. Paint on eyes and add any other Christmas decorative touches that you’d like. When you’re finished, you can easily glue on a hook to make this into a tree ornament, or just leave it out as a desk or table ornament.
3. Candy Cane Christmas Tree Ornament – This is the simplest Christmas tree ornament idea that I know, and it’s especially great for kids. Buy a pack of candy canes, any size you like, that come with a plastic cover on each cane. The hook will be used to put the candy cane onto the tree. All that you’ve got to do is get creative, and get kids involved. By googly eyes, construction paper, glitter, glue, green & red pipe cleaners, and anything else you can think of to decorate the ornaments. You might choose to bend some brown pipe cleaners around the candy cane and attach some eyes to make a reindeer, or cut out copies of family pictures to glue up and down the cane. This is a really simple Christmas homemade ornament that’s unique every time, and kids love getting creative with it.
