Homemade Christmas Tree Ornaments

by sawpan

Are you looking for fun and easy Christmas tree ornaments? Would you like to create Christmas ornaments from natural materials? Making Christmas tree ornaments from pinecones isn’t a new idea but it is still a good one. Making Christmas tree ornaments from pinecones is one of many “green” Christmas tree decorations and because the pinecones are plentiful and free, it is a money saving Christmas craft as well.

You may well remember, as I do, making Christmas tree ornaments from pinecones that look like miniature Christmas trees. This is still a cute and fun idea but our family has developed some other Christmas tree ornament crafts that you can make from pinecones as well. You can create Christmas tree ornaments using pinecones that will resemble miniature Christmas trees or even snowmen.

The first step is to collect and wash your pinecones and allow them to dry overnight. Now cover your workspace with some newspaper, organize your supplies and get started with your Christmas craft ornaments made from pinecones. If you have a glue gun and enjoy using it, you can substitute this for glue through these directions. If not, use craft glue.

Pinecone Christmas Trees Ornaments

This is an easy one that allows you to choose from what you have on hand.

Green paint and/or glitter

Small pom poms, rhinestones, buttons, beads or sequins

Glue

Thin Ribbon or thread for a hanging loop

Pinecones opened or closed.

For the pinecone Christmas tree, the idea of course is to make the pinecone green using either green paint or glitter or both. You can use a variety of small decorations from pom poms, rhinestones, buttons or sequins to decorate the tree. We had saved some broken bead bracelets and wrapped them around the trees to resemble garland. Shimmy thin ribbon or thread through the top layers of the pinecone to create a loop for hanging.

The closed pinecones make really sweet slender Christmas trees but if you’re crafting with kids it is easier for them to decorate the open pinecones that offer them somewhere to “sit” their decorations.

Pinecone Snowmen Ornaments

Pinecone snowmen are lots of fun of to make. Each one can really have a unique personality and once again you can use many items that you’ve got on hand to decorate them.

White paint

Tiny buttons, sequins or pom poms for eyes and buttons

Yarn scraps

Fabric scraps

Scissors

Brushes

Glue

Pinecones that are open.

Once you make the pinecone white, you can use a variety of materials and add lots of personality and accessories to your pinecone snowman ornaments. You can either spray paint a large group of pinecones white for this project or paint them white individually with brushes and craft paints. You can of course buy miniature hats at a craft store but it is fun to make snowman hats from felt and fabric scraps. If anyone has an old knitted glove that is missing the partner, simple snip the fingertips off and you have a perfect stocking hat for a snowman. Teach kids to “braid” three string of yarn together to make the snowmen a scarf or you can use fabric scraps as well. After they are dry tie on hangers and you’re ready to decorate your tree with a family of fun snowmen ornaments.

Get the family together to sing “Oh, Christmas Tree” and “Frosty the Snowman” while you hang your new miniature Christmas tree and snowmen ornaments.
