One way to enhance your homeschool science curriculum is to have your kids keep a science current event journal. These journals can be used to practice writing, to learn more about specific science issues and to generate ideas for science fair projects. They can also be used to jump start classroom discussions about recent scientific controversies or religion/science arguments.
Step #1 – Set Up Journals
You have several options for your homeschool science current event journals. Your first option is to use a basic ringed notebook. This journal option is great because the information is easy to access by your students during class and they can be taken with the student to the public library. Your second option is to compose your journal entries in a word processor program. This option is great if your students have access to a computer during class.
Step #2 – Make Regular Entries
In order for your science current event journals to be useful you need to make sure that your students are making regular entries in their journals and you also need to make sure that you are utilizing the information in their journals in class. It is a good idea to have your students make at least one entry into their science current event journals each week. If possible have your students complete one entry every school day.
Step #3 – Science Current Event Journal Projects
While your students will learn by simply making entries in their science current event journals, you can maximize the benefits of keeping these journals by using the entries in classroom activities. For example, you can have your kids write a report on one of the topics in their science current event journals, you can have them talk to the class about their favorite current event in their journal and you can also have your kids use their topic entries to come up with an idea for a science fair project.
Step #4 – Grading Science Current Event Journal Entries
Since it is important to evaluate your students’ work you need to grade their science current event journal entries. To grade the entries you have two options. Your first option is to give the entry a pass or fail grade and your second option is to give the entry a letter grade. You will need to base your grading on the topic that is selected, the information that the entry includes and the length of the entry. To help your kids produce quality entries in their science current event journals you will want to produce a rubrics sheet that details what you are looking for in terms of information and length.
