You just found a fish stick in your couch, your three year old is having a meltdown over nap time, and your six month old just had an explosive diaper. Ah, the joys of motherhood. Mental health experts agree that life can be a little easier if you have the support of friends. Encouragement from other moms can make a tremendous difference. Often this support can be found in local mom’s groups. If you are from the Houston area and looking for a mom’s group, here are a few resources to consider.
Houston Moms Group #1: MOPS
MOPS, which means “Mothers of Preschoolers”, is a terrific support network for many moms. It offers a time for mothers to meet, listen to a guest speaker, socialize and much more. There are currently five MOPS groups in the Houston area. Visit the website here for a list.
On the website it states, “MOPS helps moms through relationships established in the context of local groups that provide a caring atmosphere for today’s mother of young children.” If you have younger kids, MOPS is definitely something you should try. If you are nervous about attending, don’t be. Call the church office and ask about it.
Houston Moms Group #2: Moms Club of Houston
Another fantastic resource for Moms in the Houston area is a Moms club. “Moms” stands for “Moms Offering Moms Support.” They have playgroups, moms night out and much more. It is a great way to meet other moms. Take a look at the website here to see if you think you’d benefit by joining a Moms club.
Houston Moms Group #3: Mocha Moms
Mocha Moms is an organization primarily for at-home moms of color. However, they do not discriminate and anyone can join. There are two chapters in the Houston area. They offer support, friendship and community service. Check out the website here to see if you think you’d like to join Mocha Moms.
Houston Moms Group #4: La Leche League
If you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant soon, you can join La Leche League. La Leche League is a support group for breastfeeding and extended breastfeeding mothers. To learn more about meetings and membership, visit the website here.
Houston Moms Group #5: Local Playgroups and Moms Groups in Houston area
There are plenty of playgroups and parent groups in the Houston area. To find a playgroup near you, read “How to Find a Playgroup For Your Child.” Many playgroups have a time for moms to socialize as well. Cafemom is an online network for moms. There are several only Houston moms groups to join. While they are more of online groups, some will occasionally have playdates. Join the Cafemom website today to see if you can find a group for you.
Houston Moms Group #7: Local Church Groups for Ladies
Another place to find support is through a church family.
