As you get older, you retire from your job and then, the realization sets in that you still want to be doing SOMETHING. Most older people, now elderly, feel like they want to be out in the workforce to feel like they are still useful, but how? How can the elderly contribute to the community?
Elderly people are extremely useful. The elderly have knowledge that is only gained by experience. Some elderly still have physical capabilities to do manual tasks.
There are many ways for elderly to contribute to the community. They can volunteer. Multi-opportunities are available for the elderly to contribute time, knowledge, and even their physical abilities. The elderly can still work, even if it is part-time the elderly will be contributing to the community.
Ways for Elderly to Contribute to their Community:
Work – Even though the elderly have retired, they can still work. The elderly should work to keep their mind and body active. The elderly can get a part-time job at any of the local stores, or even apply for part-time jobs in offices. Most employers will appreciate their knowledge and information.
Volunteer – There are many volunteer opportunities. The elderly can volunteer at schools, churches, AARP has programs that the elderly can mentor business owners, volunteer to help with taxes, food pantries, libraries, mentoring youth, even help the habitat of humanity. The elderly have so much to offer. Elderly can even volunteer to help other elderly and visit with them at nursing homes. If you volunteer do not try to do something you cannot handle. Just volunteer for you to have something to do and to enrich your own life.
Maybe the elderly can help children and spend time with them. Some children need a little extra attention and if the elderly have time to spare, maybe they can give a child a brighter outlook for the future. Sometimes moms and dads have to work and there is no one there for the child. An elderly person may make a child’s life a little brighter because they will be the center of attention for a little.
Socialize – The elderly usually have time to spend during the day. The elderly could visit other elders or socialize with the young. They can go to lunch with other ladies and gentlemen who may need company. The elderly can also visit hospitals and spread some cheer.
It’s extremely motivating for other elders to see older people up and doing. It may motivate other elderly people to try to do something. Moving around and not giving up is important in staying young and active. With elders contributing time and labor to the community, the community will be a better place for all.
