Eventually, if you live long enough and move often enough an issue with a neighbor will surely present itself in some form. While some problems are very minor, an excessively barking dog can make life a living hell for an entire neighborhood, and needs to be addressed for the sake of all concerned quickly. Since every human being has a different personality and mindset, approaching a neighbor about their barking dog can be stressful, especially if it is a neighbor that you are unfamiliar with. In any barking dog situation, common sense and calm should rule the day, and will allow you to place the circumstance in it’s proper perspective in the scope of what you are attempting to accomplish – restoring the ability to peacefully enjoy your home and life.
A good first step in gaining quiet is to enlist the aid of the dog’s owner. This can be accomplished much more easily if you introduce yourself and strike up a brief conversation in a friendly and respectful manner. Chances are the dog’s owner may not be fully aware of the disturbance their dog is causing, and if addressing the issue with tact and diplomacy resolution may be close at hand. Try to gain some insight if you have knowledge of animal behavior as to what is getting the dog barking in the first place. With dogs in general, there is usually a cause and effect associated with excessive barking. If you and the dog’s owner are able to put your heads together and eliminate the reason for the barking, the problem is settled.
Conversely, if your kind and gentle efforts to resolve the situation are met with an angry or disrespectful response from the dog’s owner, just forget about civil communication with the individual and walk away. There is no telling what an irrational and irresponsible person may consider an appropriate response to a perceived personal attack, and it is in the best interest of all concerned to remove yourself from the situation. It is at this point one must decide the next step to quiet the nuisance. If it is a huge problem to you, there are a number of legal actions that can be taken to make the dog’s owner comply with regaining a peaceful atmosphere. There are local animal control organizations that can help, and even local police can issue a warning or fine about disturbing the peace.
In any instance, keep your cool and try not to become angry or vindictive in your efforts. View the barking dog objectively from the standpoint of a person who is simply attempting to restore order to a once quiet lifestyle.
