Every year I tell myself that next Halloween I will get my costume together early, and every year October sneaks up and leaves me scrambling to find a great costume. When this happened last Halloween, I decided to look through my funky clothes box to see what I could throw together, and this resulted in the best Halloween costume I have ever worn!
Upon my diggings, I found my long red pajamas, the old-fashioned kind with the button up “butt flap” in the back. I thought to myself, “Hmmm, what kind of costume can I glean from these?” Then it hit me, the pajamas were perfectly suited for the obnoxious Thing 1 and Thing 2 characters from Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat. Once I had the idea, the rest of the costume just flowed along. When I put on the entire costume, something happened-I became just as obnoxious, energetic, and silly as these Dr. Seuss characters were. I was dancing around and rhyming my words, and just generally being a pest! And what’s better, I was able to get away with it! Everybody who saw me that Halloween night laughed. All night people were pointing at me, smiling, laughing, and saying “Hey, it’s Thing 2, where’s Thing 1?” Unfortunately, I didn’t have a life sized Thing 1, but I did have a small stuffed Thing 1 that I carried with me and produced for anybody who asked this question. So, this costume is fine if you want to go solo but it is even better suited for two people. Everybody loved the costume! Needless to say, It was a hit! One Asian tourist even asked to take my picture. I enjoyed wearing the costume so much that I am going as Thing 1 again this year, but this time I have recruited a Thing 2. It is going to be a blast and I cannot wait for Halloween! I am passing along this guide so that others may enjoy being a Thing just as much as I did.
Here is what you will need:
Long red pajamas. (If you do not have these, any full red from head to toe outfit will work.)
Red cotton gloves. (I found these at Party City, for under five dollars.)
Red shoes (I happened to have a pair of red velvet Doc Martins, but any red shoes will do, and if you do not have these, just throw on some flip flops or tennis shoes. The footwear won’t matter that much.)
Blue Troll hair type wig, or blue spray on hair coloring. (I used the spray on dye last year, when my hair was shorter, and then just hair sprayed and ratted the heck out of my hair to achieve the effect. This year, I am looking for a wig, as my hair is darker and longer than last Halloween.)
Black eye makeup (optional. You can just go without makeup. If you want, you could go all out and buy white face paint and apply it on your whole face, as the Things do have white faces. I just used black eyeliner last year to line my eyes and create a more cartoonish effect around my mouth. )
Piece of white paper and a black sharpie. (Cut out a circle and write Thing 1 or Thing 2 on it with the black marker and pin it to your clothes, in the middle of your upper body.
Well, that is it for this how to
on becoming a Thing 1 or 2.
Now that you know how it’s done,
go on out and have some fun!
