Definition; Man Cave- an area set aside for the man of the home. Last month, I wrote an article about designing a Man Cave inside your home. This month, it is about designing one outdoors.
There are lots of reasons for putting your Man Cave outdoors. If you are a smoker, it keeps your house free of second hand smoke. Another reason is to get away from the noise that the children make. Some men just love the fresh air that the outdoors brings. Finally, it gives a man an appreciation for the freedom of space. Outside it is unlimited. I love being outside on my deck. Even in the winter, for short periods of time on my deck, I get that sense of freedom.
This article will give you some suggestions for developing your Man Cave outdoors. Let’s start with your area first. A deck or patio area makes a great place for an outdoor space. Most family decks and patios are used for family get together. Why not expand on this area, for your Man Cave? Build from the bottom up. Checkout your flooring. If it is a deck area, clean it and seal it. I discovered that the sun does more damage to wood than rain does. Because of this reason, I put a roof over my deck.
A roof allows you to use your Man Cave, even if it is raining. This will cost you a little cash. However, it is worth doing. If you don’t want a permanent roof, you can go with an awning, that is retractable. Sunsetter Awnings has a great web site to help you get started. A roof will keep you cool on hot days and protect your wood. This can be used on a deck or patio. If you decide to put up a solid wood roof, paint it a dark color underneath. Smoke from your grill and smoker will turn your ceiling black.
Your next step is to select furniture for your Man Cave outdoor space. You can find some great deals during the off season (winter) at Lowe’s and Home Depot. You want good solid outdoor chairs and tables. Many are made out of cast iron. You also want comfortable cushions for this furniture.
No Man Cave would be complete without a grill, smoker, or stove for cooking. Portable ones on wheels are a great idea. They can easily be moved to another location, when not in use. I recommend that you use your cookware at an open end of your outdoor area.
I placed a large atrium door to my house. This way, I can sit on my deck and watch the game. No need to bring the set outside. I also place an old radio in a sheltered corner of my Man Cave. No games on television, no problem. I just turn on the radio and listen to talk radio or my favorite music.
I placed some soft lighting on the ceiling of my deck. soft lighting helps to reduce insects during the summer and warm months. You can use all types of lighting. I have seen Japanese lanterns used around the border of a deck or patio. You can usually find these at an RV sore.
An outdoor Man Cave can improve a man’s mental state of mind. By having his own place, he can get away from the stresses of life. A deck and patio is idea for this area.
