In the last seven years of living in Bangkok, Thailand, because I travel a lot, I’ve had to get extra visa pages added to my US passport at the US Embassy twice. Many travelers find themselves having to get extra pages added to their passports in Bangkok. The good news is though it’s easy and fast. So, if you find yourself in Bangkok, Thailand with no empty pages left in your passport, don’t worry. Follow these quick tips and you’ll have new pages in your passport in no time.
How Much Does it Cost? – You’ll be happy to know, it’s free. The US embassies seem to be one of the few embassies that add pages in passports for free. I also have a British passport and recently let it expire as, not only do they not add extra pages, but they also charge you $275 to get a new one, compared to the US charging $75 per passport. Be thankful you’re American!
How Do I Get to the US Embassy in Bangkok? – Getting to the US Embassy in Bangkok is easy. Take the sky train to Ploenchit Station, get off and follow the signs to Wireless Road. Walk up Wireless Road on the left hand side for about 10 minutes. You’ll pass many embassies on your left hand side and will eventually see the US embassy buildings. Do not make the mistake I did on my first visit and go to the US embassy buildings on the right hand side of the street. This is the main US Embassy building, but services for US citizens are in the buildings on the left hand side of the street. Go through security, getting a card from security to say you’ve been approved to go in and follow the path until you get into the embassy building.
What Times Can I Go To Get New Passport Pages? – The US Embassy in Bangkok is open for services to US citizens from 7:30am to 4pm, but they only provide passport services from 7:30am to 11am or 1pm to 2pm, Mondays through Fridays, except for holidays. I got there at 1pm and was leaving with new visa pages in my passport by 1:45pm.
Getting New Pages in Your US Passport – In the waiting room, pick up an Application for Additional Visa Pages, complete it and hand it in at the counter. They will then tell you to take a seat and wait. Last time I was there it took less than 30 minutes from handing in my passport to getting it back with new visa pages added. They’ll call your name when it’s ready. Check it to make sure it’s your passport and you’re all ready to leave. Just make sure, going back through security that you hand in the card they gave you when you walked in.
