While sexy Halloween costumes have become more popular in the past few years, none have been more popular then 1950s silver screen legend Marilyn Monroe. Here are some tips to making your costume design.
Your unforgettable Marilyn Monroe costume must start with one of Marilyn’s unforgettable dress styles. Everyone remembers the white halter dress worn in “The Seven Year Itch” or the hot pink, strapless gown she wore in “Gentleman Prefer Blondes.” Searching the Google or Yahoo, you will find even more options that range from strapless to form fitting numbers in every color from glittering gold to sleek black. Depending on your choice, you simply can head to the local thrift store or the back of your or best friend’s closet. If not, most costume shops will at least carry the famous white halter dress. Remember a Marilyn costume is the only justification for wearing white after Labor Day.
Hair and Make-up
Even if you already have platinum blonde hair, a wig is an essential part pulling off your Marilyn makeover. Find a platinum blonde colored wig which sports large face framing curls. Most costume shops will have a Marilyn wig. However, if you already have platinum tresses style away. Your look can be short or shoulder length.
Marilyn accented her natural beauty with simple trick that offered a glamorous effect. Marilyn donned arched, thin eyebrows. The look can be obtained with eyebrow pencils shaping your own. She also had thick lashes which anyone can have with the help of good mascara or fake lashes. Trace around eyes with thin black eye liner. As for lipstick, depending on the color of your skin and dress, rich reds and darker pinks will do. And, don’t forget, your classic Marilyn look is not complete without the signature beauty mark placed strategically (to the left) on Marilyn’s cheek.
Marilyn Monroe’s star quality did not often require jewelry; however, she was not seen often with necklaces or chokers. Many photos reveal she wore large dangling earrings and diamond studded bracelets. So for your signature Marilyn look, costume jewelry should fit the bill. If you opt for chokers or necklaces, think on the grand scale or multiple string pearls or diamonds (or other’s women’s best friend “cubic Zirconias.”)
Heels are called for in any Marilyn costume. If you don’t have heels that make your dress, opt for something flashy and glittery. You can add sequence or glitter to cloth shoes. Ankle straps are optional. Remember, depending on the climate panty hose can be optional.
With some of the strapless dresses, gloves may be a great accessory; however, if your dress is black, white, pink, burgundy, etc., opt for long gloves, and not short, in the same color.
Once you have the look, you can act the part and your Marilyn Monroe will be unique. And, just like Norman Jean’s alter ego, you in your costume will be a head turner and show stopper.
