My hobby is doing crafts, and painting ceramics, terra cotta pots and anything else I can get my hands on such as a plain resin garden statue. Terra cotta pots are great to pot plants in, but by themselves they are plain and boring. With a little imagination and these easy as 1-2-3 instructions, you can create your own Smiling Candy Corn terra cotta pot to use as a colorful fall decoration.
Supplies needed to make the Smiling Candy Corn terra cotta pot are:
(Patio Paint is excellent for painting on terra cotta and wood, but any acrylic paint should do. The colors listed are those for Deco Art’s Patio Paint.)
Cloud White Patio Paint
Fiesta Yellow Patio Paint
Geranium Red Patio Paint
Tiger Lily Orange Patio Paint
Wrought Iron Black Patio Paint
1 Terra Cotta Pot (any size)
Various Sized Paint Brushes
Circle Sponge Dabbers in 2 sizes
2 wooden flat, pre-cut triangles
2 small wooden dowels
Styrofoam Brick (to fit in the terra cotta pot)
Fall Colored Silk Flowers
Optional: Stencils (circles, ovals, etc)
Step One to Make a Smiling Candy Corn Terra Cotta Pot: Clean the Pot
Use a wet sponge or rag to wipe down the terra cotta pot and let dry.
Step Two to Make a Smiling Candy Corn Terra Cotta Pot: Paint the Pot
After the terra cotta pot has dried, paint the top edge of the pot Cloud White, paint the center of the pot Tiger Lily Orange and the bottom Fiesta Yellow. Try to paint the yellow stripe at the bottom to match the width of the white stripe at the top of the pot. Let dry.
Step Three to Make a Smiling Candy Corn Terra Cotta Pot: Make the Candy Corn Wooden Accessory
While you are waiting for the paint to dry on the terra cotta pot, let’s get the wooden triangles ready to paint. Use the stencils to lightly sketch an outline for the Candy Corn face on the wooden triangles. Refer to the photo if necessary, or create (freehand) a face of your own. Using light pencil strokes draw curved dividing lines on the triangle to separate the three candy corn colors. Paint the top third of the triangle Cloud White, paint the center third Tiger Lily Orange and the bottom third Fiesta Yellow. Let dry.
Step Four to Make a Smiling Candy Corn Terra Cotta Pot: Draw and Paint the Face
Using a pencil, lightly sketch the eyes on the pot. Use the small circle sponge to lightly dab a red nose in the center. I’ve found this to work best if you get the sponge slightly wet, dip the flat circle into the paint then dab it onto a paper towel before dabbing it onto the pot. Repeat the process with the bigger circle sponge for the cheeks just below and to the outside of the eyes. Use the Wrought Iron Black paint to outline and paint in the eyes, eyelashes and the squiggly line between the cheeks for the mouth. Use the Cloud White paint to paint the whites of the eyes and also to highlight the eyes, nose and cheeks. As additional decorations you have the option of painting squiggly lines at the top and bottom of the pot and/or painting flowers or other candy corn around the top of the terra cotta pot. Let dry.
Step Five to Make a Smiling Candy Corn Terra Cotta Pot: Finish the Wooden Candy Corn Accessory
On the wooden triangles, freehand or use the stencils to sketch some eyes, a nose and a mouth. Paint accordingly. (Refer to the photo if necessary for ideas.) Once dry, hot glue the wooden candy corns to the end of the dowels.
Step Six to Make a Smiling Candy Corn Terra Cotta Pot: Add Fall Flowers
Put the Styrofoam in the bottom of the terra cotta pot and arrange the fall flowers you chose to put in the pot. Add the wooden candy corn accessory for an extra fall pop!
