Recently my church decided to host a Girls Movie Night and invited all the pre-teen girls and teen girls from the youth group to join us for a night of movies, food and talking. We picked a movie from our local Christian store that dealt with dating and watched it together. After the movie, we led a casual discussion about dating and all the issues that come along with dating. The girls were encouraged to ask questions and the younger girls especially benefitted from listening to the older girls talk about their experiences with dating or choosing not to date. Our Girls Movie Night was a huge success and the girls absolutely loved it. Here’s how you can plan your own Girls Movie Night!
How To Plan a Girls Movie Night
Step One – Choose a location and date
First things first, you’ll want to settle on a date and location right away. Try to pick a date that is most convenient for the girls in your group. The same goes for the location – try to make it a location that is as central as possible. In most cases, your church is the best option since the girls are used to meeting there anyway for youth group. However, if your church does not have a comfortable place where the girls can sit and watch the movie, then it would be better to host the movie night in someone’s home instead.

Step Two – Choose the movie
The movie you show on movie night does not necessarily have to be a Christian movie, but it should be a movie that is appropriate for even pre-teen girls. Think about what kind of subject you want the movie night to be centered around and go from there. It can be anything from dating, making right choices, college, peer pressure, etc. If you don’t know where to start looking, head to your local Christian book store. Explain to the sales clerk what it is you are looking for and have them give you suggestions for appropriate movies. You can also ask other adults and older teens in your church for their suggestions as well.

Step Three – Don’t forget the food
You can’t have a movie night without food or snacks of some sort. We usually just order pizza for our movie nights, but depending on your budget you could do anything from sandwiches, chicken or have a more elaborate buffet spread. It all depends on who is providing the food and whether you’ll be asking the girls the pitch in for the food as well. If you don’t want to have food, you can get away with just snacks as well. Things like chips, popcorn, candy and soda are always popular with teenagers.

Step Four – Be prepared to discuss the movie afterwards
Once the movie is over, you’ll want to have a discussion time with your girls. Don’t force anything, try to keep the mood as casual as possible. In most cases, you can use a simple question such as, “What did you think of (insert movie character’s name here) decision?” to start the conversation. Let the girls do as much of the talking as possible. Remember, you’re not there to teach, you’re there to help guide along the conversation. Also let the girls know that you are available for questions and ask some of the older girls if they are willing to take questions as well.
