The retail Holiday season starts in mid-October and runs through Christmas, everyone knows this is the biggest time of year for the retail industry with Black Friday deals to day after Christmas steals. Here are a few insider tips on how you can get the most for your money at Macy’s from a Macy’s employee.
Sales – Macy’s has sales almost every week and most of them start on Wednesday and end the following week through Sunday. So first and foremost DO NOT shop at Macy’s on Monday or Tuesday unless there is a sale going on. Some sales are better then others, with One Day Sales (which are really two day sales, a “preview” day, then the actual sale day) normally the best.
Macy’s Star Rewards Card – The Macy’s Star Rewards Card, or simply Macy’s credit card is a good tool to have, if you know how to use credit cards correctly. Like most department store credit cards the APR is going to be extremely high but the perks of having the card is the percent off on sale and clearance items cardholders have during the most of the sales. The percentage ranges from 10%-20%. The key to using this card is as soon as you use it for the discount, pay the balance off, which can be done in store by any sales associate. This will prevent you from receiving the outstanding finance charges.
Coupons – Each Macy’s sale typically has a coupon of some sort to use, it may be a percentage off or a certain dollar amount off a purchase of $25 or more. Be sure to read the fine print as most coupons exclude designer items such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Dockers, Levis, etc.
Clearance – Always, ALWAYS check the clearance racks before you buy anything at Macy’s. Most likely, you will find something very similar to what you are looking for, for substantially cheaper then what you were going to buy. Macy’s has three different price reductions on the majority of their items: 25%, 50% and 75% some departments have reductions in between such as 30% or 80%, be sure to look for the red and white Clearance sticker, this will tell you the original price and the price it is now. Most sales have an additional 30-75% off clearance as well. Also be sure to take the product to a price checker for two reasons 1) To make sure it is really clearance, and 2) the price may be lower then what the sticker states, making it an even better deal!
Now that you have an understanding of all the ways to save with Macy’s the formula for saving even more money is combining all of the tools above. Here is how: Go to Macys.com, at the bottom of the website there is a link to their weekly sales catalogs, here you will find any coupons and be able to see if there is an additional off on clearance. If there isn’t an additional off clearance do not bother going into the store. Wait until clearance has an additional 30-75% off. Once you find a sale that has a coupon and an additional clearance savings visit your local Macy’s and head straight for the clearance racks, there is a areas in each department. Look for the big red signs that say Clearance. Once there, sift through the products to find what your looking for. Once you have your item(s) head to the nearest price scanner, scanning them will give you the actual price and, if its a “Use Your Card” event you will be able to find out how much more you can save by using your Macy’s Star Rewards Card. The price will not reflect the additional savings from the coupon. If the price is right, take the product(s) to the nearest sales associate, be sure to either hand them the coupon first, or lay it on top of the merchandise where they can see it. Next, the sales associate should ask you if you would like to open up a Macy’s Star Rewards account today, if you do not have an account, I highly recommend opening an account, even if it is just for this one purchase as you will get the new cardholder discount which is an additional 20% on top of the additional clearance and coupon savings. That adds up to a great deal! Here is an example of how much you could save:
Original Price: $200
Clearance Price: $100
Additional 40% off clearance price: $60 (40% off $100 equals to $40 off)
15% off with your Macy’s Card: $51 (15% off $60 equals to $9 off)
$10 off purchase of $25 or more coupon: $41 ($51 subtract $10 equals $41)
Your total will be $41 plus tax, that is a total of 80% off the original retail price! Remember that most products are marked down as low as 75% so you could save even more. Use these easy tools, follow the steps, and pay your Macy’s card off as soon as you have a balance on it and you will save a ton of money that can be saved…or used to buy more products!
