When your body succumbs to cold symptoms it’s a sign you immune system has been overwhelmed. While there is no treatment known to prevent colds essential oils can support and help your immune system to function at its best. Like rest, diet, and exercise, essential oils can be an important tool in a holistic lifestyle.
The first step in making your life more holistic, would be to incorporate use of essential oils in a preventative manner. Include essential oils in your daily life. Use them in the diffuser, the bath and in body oils. Each essential oil has over 100 components. In a holistic view point each of these components has a purpose even though some of them are minute. For this reason it is important you use only 100% essential oil oils. It is also preferable if you use organic essential oils.
Most colds are triggered by viruses. Viruses are not affected by antibiotics and generally just have to run their course. People are often in a hurry to get well. To accommodate them, doctors will prescribe antibiotics even though they believe the illness is caused by a virus. Antibiotics have saved many lives and are a wonderful discovery but they do nothing for viruses. Antibiotics cause problems with the natural flora of the bowel sometimes causing yeast infections.
Upper respiratory problems are especially susceptible to the effect of essential oils which are well absorbed through inhalation. Even though many essential oils have antibacterial and antiviral properties, the oils effect is not directed towards a particular bacteria or virus but toward supporting the malfunctioning immune system that allowed the body to become sick to begin with. One day cures are not the goal. Improving overall health is. In improving overall health the incidence of all infections will decrease.
Eucalyptus has been used for centuries to treat respiratory infections. Put several drops in your diffuser and keep it going in whatever room you’re spending time in most. Use several drops of eucalyptus essential oil in your bath. You’ll doubly benefit from inhaling the stem and absorbing it through your skin.
Use a mix of peppermint, lavender, thyme, and sage essential oil in your diffuser to clean the air. These essential oils can also be mixed in carrier oil and used over the chest and neck. Too much use of any undiluted oil can cause sensitivity over time. More is not always better when it comes to essential oils. Educate yourself before using any essential oil.
Make sure your water intake is adequate as water is vital to all body processes. Get enough rest and supplement your vitamin C intake.
Essential oils can be a vital part of a holistic approach to health care and prevention. Just remember that even though essential oils are natural inappropriate use can still be dangerous.
