Over the past months our family has started a tradition of trying different rolls and flavored coffees each Saturday morning. One of our best discoveries has been “Hy-Vee Orange Danish” rolls. There are eight rolls per tube. They are about two dollars a tube at Hy-Vee (where else?) and worth every penny and more.
“Hy-Vee Orange Danish” rolls come in a bright yellow-orange tube trimmed in red and white (coincidentally the colors of the Hy-Vee logo). There is also a picture of the finished product, decked out in a very light orange frosting.
“Hy-Vee Orange Danish” rolls are easy to prepare. You can just pop them into a greased, round cake pan and bake them at 375 degrees for 18 to 22 minutes. We actually use a glass pie plate instead of a cake pan and this works just as well. When you take them out, just spread on the icing so it melts down into the cracks, and let them cool a bit before eating.
“Hy-Vee Orange Danish” rolls are identical in size and shape to a packaged cinnamon roll. There’s even a bit of cinnamon in these rolls. I’m not just sure what makes this a “Danish” rather than a “roll”. Maybe it just has to do with what’s inside.
“Hy-Vee Orange Danish” rolls are similar to an orange roll made by Pillsbury, but, believe it or not, Hy-Vee Orange Danish” are better, according to a blind taste test conducted by my family. (No, I’m not kidding.) We actually did a little taste test to see which we liked better. And I wasn’t even planning a review at the time. We just wanted to know if the extra we paid for the brand name was worth it. We were a bit surprised at the results. “Hy-Vee Orange Danish” rolls are far better than the name brand. Pillsbury’s version may be a bit softer in texture, but the texture of “Hy-Vee Orange Danish” rolls is still very good and the flavor is great. “Hy-Vee Orange Danish” rolls are tangy and citrus-y. There is orange peel in the frosting that really gives the orange flavor punch and lasting power, without being bitter.
Like other breakfast rolls, “Hy-Vee Orange Danish” rolls aren’t great for you. There is four percent of your daily recommended value of iron and two percent of your daily recommended value of fiber, but there’s also eighteen percent of your daily recommended allowance of saturated fat and 180 calories in each roll. So “Hy-Vee Orange Danish” rolls are probably best in moderation.
So, if you are looking for an inexpressive breakfast treat that tastes even better than the brand name competition (in our opinion), I highly recommend “Hy-Vee Orange Danish” rolls.
