While some people like to argue that gift cards are the easy way out of spending time getting a gift that has a meaning, gift cards are convenient and liked by most. If you have decided to get a gift card for a loved one, make sure that you check a couple things. First, check to see if there are any fees attached to having the card without using it in a certain period of time. Secondly, make sure there isn’t a close expiration date with the card. As soon as you know whether or not the money you put on the card will be there when you give the gift, you next have to decide what kind of card you want. For teenagers, below are a few ideas.
Itunes gift cards are really popular with teens. If you are ever around teenagers you would notice how often they have their headphones in. These gift cards are a smart idea because they get to choose what songs they want (as opposed to buy a CD you think they’d like) and they can be relatively inexpensive.
Clothing stores (i.e. Abecrombie, Hot Topic, Aeropostle)
Clothing store gift cards are typically a better idea for the teenage shopaholic you know. If you know of a girl’s favorite store that they frequent often, go ahead and pick one up. Getting a gift card for clothing makes it easier for them to buy something that suits their style and fits, instead of being that relative that buys them that sweater that they find completely ugly or is 7 sizes too small.
Restaurant gift cards are a good idea as long as you don’t mind putting at least 10-15 dollars on the card. If you have any less, they may not be able to even purchase a full meal at their favorite restaurant. Also, keep in mind that teens can have picky preferences as to what they will and will not eat. Make sure to take into consideration whether or not the teen consumes meat or not (for example, don’t give a gift card to a popular steak joint if the teen is a vegetarian).
Gas Gift Cards
Did a teen in your family just recently turn 16? These gift cards are extremely handy when it comes to teenagers. Gas prices are constantly going up and down, and it is handy to have a prepaid gas card to swipe to buy that expensive fuel. Even if the teen is older than 16 this gift is greatly appreciated. Make sure to take into consideration the teen’s age. For instance, don’t get a 14 year old a gas card… they won’t have any use for it… and they’ll probably catch on that you don’t really know how old they are.
The card doesn’t necessarily have to come from Target, but any all-in-one store would do. These cards are handy because the teen has a ton of options as to what they would like to purchase.
Prepaid visa gift cards are a smart idea if you’d rather not just give the teen cash. It looks as though you put more thought and effort into their gift that just going to the nearest ATM and making a withdrawal. However, make sure they say that they can be used in the region you live in or where they will be spending it (i.e. don’t give them a Visa gift card for their big trip to Europe because they won’t be able to use it). Also, these are the cards that you will definitely have to double check to make sure there are no fees for not using the card within a certain time period.
As gift cards have become more popular, more and more places offer them. Make sure you thoroughly think through where you decide to purchase one for that special teen, but don’t be put off by those that say that the gift card is impersonal. Sometimes it’s nice to let the person decide exactly what there gift will be.
