Do you have a pet dog that you love so much that you may be stressing him out? Many dog owners have expectations of their dogs that their dogs cannot possibly fulfill. Why? Because dogs have a psychological make up that is totally different from humans. Dogs don’t think like humans-they think like dogs. It is your job as the pet owner to know how your dog thinks.
If you bought your pet dog to fill a companionship void in your life, that’s okay. Dogs make great friends and companions. However, you stress out your dog when you try to make him human. You are trying to make him think and behave out of character.
Your dog cannot behave as a missing child, a missing spouse, or a missing friend. He can only be an excellent friend to you in a dog’s capacity to be a friend. Your dog doesn’t get what you want from him!
There are six basic traits your dog has that you must know in order to realize that your dog cannot be humanized.
A dog uses his senses in the order of smell, energy (instinct), sight, and hearing. Since hearing is a dog’s fourth strongest sense, you might as well stop yelling at him. He pays the most attention to your smell and your energy.
A dog’s sense of energy makes it impossible for you to hide from him how you’re feeling. He is sending signals to you as well through energy, scent and body language.
A dog has a pack mentality. If you are not his leader, he will take the role or start displaying an unstable personality.
A dog sees you as stable or unstable, a leader or a follower.
A dog’s goal is to live harmoniously within his environment.
Dogs live in the now. They don’t have memories good or bad and they don’t have plans for the future.
When you read each of these basic traits of a dog you begin to understand why your relationship with your dog may not be working. It is impossible for a dog to satisfy your natural need to connect with other human beings. When you expect your dog to satisfy that need, you are asking something of him that he was not created to do.
If you really want the right kind of relationship with your dog there are excellent books written by experts on a dog’s psychological make up. You are the human owner. You have been given dominion over your pet and all other animals on this planet. Use your God-given natural dominance over your pet to let him know you love and care for him just the way he is. When you begin to relate to him as he is, you will find that he won’t resent you for it. He’ll love you even more.
