Former President Jimmy Carter has decided to play the racism card against people who oppose Barack Obama and his policies. Jimmy Carter is the latest white person to do so, following in the footsteps of Maureen Dowd.
“I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he’s African American,” Jimmy Carter is quoted as saying to NBC by the Washington Post.
Previously Maureen Dowd, commenting in a New York Times column on Rep, Joe Wilson’s outburst, claimed that she imagined Wilson saying, “You lie, boy!”
Maureen Dowd is a northeastern liberal who seems to rarely if ever venture out of the northeastern, effete, media cocoon. Therefore she likely still thinks that the South, where Joe Wilson comes from, is still dominated by inbred crackers who wear white hoods and who like nothing better than to go around late at night terrorizing African Americans.
Jimmy Carter, on the other hand, is from Georgia and therefore should know better.
There are two theories about Jimmy Carter. One is that he does know better and that he is being just as cynical as anyone else who plays the racism card, using it to try to stifle debate.
The other theory, posited by Hot Air’s Allahpundit, is that Jimmy Carter actually believes it and thinks he is elevating the debate by equating opposition to socialism to white racism.
I personally tend toward believing the second theory, the idea being that a man who messed up as thoroughly as Jimmy Carter did when he infested the White House is capable of believing anything.
This begs the question of why anyone, even a news organization as dysfunctional as NBC’s, is even consulting Jimmy Carter about anything. It’s true that Jimmy Carter made a little news by having his book on the Israel Palestinian conflict endorsed by none other than Osama bin Laden. Here too Jimmy Carter tried to play the racism card by using the word “apartheid” in the title. It is possible that Jimmy Carter has racism on the brain and sees it in everything.
It is a very sad thing. When Barack Obama was first elected, many people thought that the United States was entering an era of racial harmony, having proven that racism was a thing of the past by electing a young, African American as President in preference to an old, white guy. It seems, though, that just the opposite has occurred. As Barack Obama and his policies become more and more unpopular, racial tensions are becoming more and more heated, stoked by people like Jimmy Carter and Maureen Dowd desperate to shame more than half of the country into sullen silence.
