Larry Johnson and the Bengals may be both an unlikely and fitting fit. If Larry Johnson goes with the Bengals, Johnson can revive his career with a current winner, and one that needs a backup runner. The Larry Johnson Bengals rumors sparked up after Cedric Benson’s injury yesterday, as the Bengals need a backup plan in the long term, now that they’re set for a playoff run.
But the Larry Johnson Bengals merger isn’t official yet, as talks are still ongoing, but could succeed soon. Yet Cincinnati fans have to wonder if signing Johnson would be a move out of the bad old days.
Larry Johnson was a big star with the Chiefs, but got into frequent trouble off the field. The final straw came weeks ago, when he made repeated homosexual slurs and bashed his head coach. As such, the Chiefs released the man who nearly became the leading rusher in Kansas City history.
Even without his recent off-field scandals, Johnson has barely delivered on the field lately. Yet Larry Johnson could be an option for the Bengals, although Cincinnati has done quite well with Cedric Benson. However, with Benson injured in yesterday’s gigantic win at Pittsburgh, the Bengals may need to rest him and get him healthy for December and January.
As such, rumors spread that Larry Johnson may have already signed with the Bengals, although nothing has been confirmed. As of now, the two sides are still talking, though a deal could be made soon. If Johnson comes on board, he could play as soon as this week, when the Bengals take on Oakland.
However, Larry Johnson could only be a backup for the Bengals in the long term, once Benson is back to his old self. Cincinnati fans may be a little weary of this move, since the Bengals are all too used to scandal-ridden players like Johnson. The team became better known for frequent arrests and scandals in the last several years, than for their play on the field – which was also lousy.
Against all odds in 2009, the Bengals have finally looked like a contender again, and are in control of the AFC North for the moment. But now Cincinnati has gone from a Cinderella story, to a team that has become the hunted instead of the hunter. Time will tell if the Bengals can really compete with the Colts, Patriots and Chargers in January – and beat the Steelers again if they need to.
If Larry Johnson joins the Bengals, he may not be the deciding factor, but he could be a crucial one depending on Benson. However, Benson himself had a lot of question marks when he joined the Bengals, and has revived his career in the first half of the season.
Larry Johnson needs to do the same in Cincinnati, for the sake of his career – especially if a division title and even Super Bowl hopes are at stake. No one expected that the Bengals would be talking about these things – but since they are, the pressure is on to keep this up.
