The Las Olas Grande Beach Resort/Condo was our vacation destination this summer, and I have to say that we really enjoyed ourselves. We were skeptical at first, but we ventured out carefully and followed every precaution and all of the advice that was given to us by friends and family members who had visited the region before.
It is a family-oriented location that could be visited year-round if so desired. The freshly manicured private beach to the breathtaking ocean view is so spectacular I could easily live there. Our Condo had everything anybody could ever need with all the comforts of home. The Las Olas Grande Resort/ Condo is a high rise Condo complex. Every condo suite faced out to the ocean with a balcony that stretches the full length of the back side. The ocean was in full view as the back wall of the living /dining room was a window from ceiling to floor. On our first evening in the room we were treated to the sights and sounds of a local fireworks display over the ocean. We just knew that the fireworks were meant for us as we were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary.
Las Olas Grande Beach Resort/Condo is 20 minutes south of the Mexican border from San Diego. As you enter Mexico you travel southeast along the Pacific Ocean. The countryside at this stage of travel is a little disheartening as you experience the devastation of poverty through your tinted windows, locked doors and air conditioned car you can’t help but feel sad for the local people. The road along the way will deliver us into another world not far from this area. Just inside the Mexican border is a culture that sets itself apart from the world as you may know it in California. This is their life and most of them make the best of it.
As we travel south the view of the Pacific Ocean is magnificent. The weather was warm and comfortable. The Mexican culture abounds with bright hues of oranges, reds and blues. With interesting displays of trinkets and pottery for sale. I was amazed at the boldness of the vendors who approached us to buy their wares. I wanted to buy more and indulge the great bargains, but we traveled by air to San Diego from our home near the Sacramento area. I didn’t want to pay additional fees for added weight on the flight home. I did buy a few small things, a couple of t-shirts and a beautiful red dress that my husband picked out for me.
The people we met on our vacation were people I could easily call friends. It was nice to be treated with respect and consideration being so far from home and among strangers. A restaurant that we visited in Puerto Nuevo was only minutes from our Condo in Calafia there we enjoyed a Mariachi band that offered to play and sing a beautiful love song for us for only $5.00. What the heck we were on vacation. The waiters all wore white from head to toe and were very entertaining, gracious and met our every need. My husband ordered the house specialty which was Lobster and I went with a chicken Enchilada to be on the safe side as the menu was all in Spanish. The food was very good. On our trip we were being very careful not to drink the water or order iced drinks. I have to admit neither of us got sick.
The highlight of the Las Olas Grande Resort/ Condo was the swimming pools and the hot tubs. Cleaned and refreshed daily by the grounds keepers. I did manage to work-out in the spacious weight room. It was a little difficult to concentrate though as I strolled along on the treadmill over- looking the crashing waves of the ocean from this rounded, glassed-in sanctuary with heaven sent Pavarotti music playing over the speakers.
Soon enough it was time to pack up and on the day we had to leave we felt sad to be leaving such a beautiful place but, don’t worry…… WE’LL BE BACK!!!!
