Many Americans truly believe that legalizing marijuana will help our nation get out of the recession. With the drug also known as “cannabis” being illegal it is too hard to say whether or not legalizing marijuana would indeed bring our country out of the recession. In its current stage marijuana is only legal to Americans that truly need it and that are prescribed to it by a physician. In over 172 countries or territories around the world the growth of marijuana is legal and legal to use by those who inhabit that country. As far as for North America though the opportunity for legalization is slim.
The use of marijuana as medicine can be dated back to 2727 B.C. by China and by 500 A.D. Marijuana had made its way all the way to Europe. When America was established after the revolutionary war the primary crop at Mount Vernon was cannabis. But it was not until 1937 that marijuana was illegalized by the U.S federal government, although in 1942 it is proven that the U.S government did use marijuana as a truth serum.
By 1965 more than one million Americans had tried marijuana, and by 1972 over 24 million Americans had experienced the effects of marijuana. This class was also considered the baby boomers. The decade of the 1980’s the Reagan administration had begun its war on drugs and to this day every 38 seconds someone is arrested for possession of marijuana. In 1996 California passed a bill allowing for the use of medical marijuana, and now marijuana is America’s #1 cash crop bringing in over $36 billion a year. Information site
So why is marijuana still illegal? No one truly knows but still Americans fight for its legalization. It has been said that once marijuana is legal and properly taxed that California alone would bring in one billion dollars a year just from marijuana sales. Keeping a clean bill of health on marijuana sold in America would allow for a safer consumption. Crime rates would go down and our country would strive and reap the benefits from the legalization.
There are no proven accidents or deaths linking marijuana as the source, unlike alcohol and other drug related substances being the source. Marijuana being used medically has proven that it is a safe drug that reduces pain, and has been proven to prevent glaucoma because smoking it releases pressure on the eye. Information site.
When America went through our last depression the solution that brought our country out was legalizing alcohol. Crime rates went down and the country benefited from the taxing of the product, now once again our country suffers and the legalization of marijuana will bring our country back to where it was. The plan for the legalization of marijuana would not just mean that it is now free for whomever to smoke but to be sold strictly like alcohol, for any persons over the age of 21. As Barrack Obama said himself, “The war on drugs has been an utter failure, and we need to rethink and decriminalize our marijuana laws.”
