Ever since my early childhood I’ve been involved in the sport of Soccer. For years I played in various leagues and then later on passed on some knowledge as both a coach and referee in some youth leagues. Regardless of all that time spent learning, playing and coaching the game I still find it nearly impossible to sit through an entire match on television. Here today I want to take a look at the top 5 reasons why soccer will never be big in the U.S.
If you take a look at the popular sports in our country they are based more on attitude and strength. Of course there are moments where soccer can get rough but it still pales in comparison to a sport such as football. Then you have mixed martial arts which is one of the fastest growing sports in the country if not the world. Most people want to see a physical battle rather than finesse and skill.
One of the best ways to promote a product is to use a famous person to bring attention to the item. It’s not different in sports as cities us stars to sell tickets and build a franchise. Just look at what Lebron James did for the Cleveland Cavs. So I ask you where are the American soccer stars? Even when we do get good talent most of them end up going overseas for more money.
It’s time to face the truth people and acknowledge that Americans are impatient and want instant satisfaction. That is why mixed martial arts is slowly gaining on boxing and the NFL eventually overtook baseball. There is something to be said about a soccer game that ends in a 1-0 score after a defensive battle. However most fans want to see scoring and other sports such as basketball and football provide that action.
I was interested in baseball at an early age in life but never really got into the sport. Why? Because all my friends were much better than me since they had been playing longer than myself. That is exactly the situation fans here in the U.S. have to realize as well. Most Americans can’t get into the sport on a global level because other countries are better than us and we hate to lose.
In my opinion the number one reason why soccer will never be big in the U.S. is because of tradition. When you grow up in a certain area you adopt the traditions from the region. For example I live in the south where football is a way of life. At the same time it’s pretty hard to find many baseball fans in the area. If you were to go up north in places like New York and Boston they are hardcore baseball fans because they grew up with the Yankees and Red Sox. The kids grow up playing soccer because it’s fun but once they get older they move on to play other sports.
