We are hearing it almost every time we hear a politician speak. It may become a Republican campaign theme. The Republicans and Democrats are talking about it. Everyone appears concerned about the national debt. Everyone is concerned about the lowering value of the dollar. At least, that’s what we hear.
But what we see presents a totally different view. We see politicians entering office on promises of new social programs and promises of tax incentives and tax cuts. And each politician claims that he will also lower the national debt.
President Obama talks about lowering the national debt, but that will never become a reality because though it is in his rhetoric, it doesn’t appear in his budget. It has never appeared in any budget under any Democratic administration.
The Republicans talk about lowering the national debt, but that will never become a reality because though it is in their rhetoric, is doesn’t appear in any of their hundreds of amendments: Not even in the ones that did not enter the bills. It has never appeared in any budget under any Republican administration.
Everyone talks about lowering the national debt, but no one, absolutely no one, want to generate revenue for that purpose. No one ever did.
Congress never passed a bill that adds one more question to the IRS tax form: Are you willing to donate one dollar towards lowering the national deficit? No President ever proposed it. No politician ever suggested it in a Presidential campaign. And doubt if any politician would even consider it.
Has Congress ever considered a special tax solely for the purpose of lowering the national debt? Absolutely not!New taxes? No one would vote for a new tax and the people would not support it.
Has anyone even suggested that any tax on windfall profits should be used to lower the national debt? Absolutely not!
When Social Programs are cut, do those funds go towards lowering the national debt? God forbid! People want their tax dollars returned to them. Applying those tax dollars to the national debt would be ample reason to throw that politician out of office!
People, including legislators and Presidents, have never been serious about lowering the national debt and, I think they never will be serious about it.
The Republicans would rather give tax cuts and tax incentives. Balancing the budget does not lower the national debt. It just lowers the increase in the national debt. The democrats would rather create more social programs. But everyone will use the increase in the national debt as a campaign tool to win an election.
In conclusion, the government and the people are perfectly willing to drive our nation into bankruptcy. The Republicans will do it by providing tax cuts and tax incentives the Federal government cannot afford to give. The Democrats will do it by providing social programs the government cannot afford. And the people will do it by demanding more government programs, more tax cuts and more tax incentives.
Nobody cares about the national debt nor the value of the dollar.
