Mariah Carey diva jokes, spoken by Kate Garraway to the media, have caused the host of GMTV to issue an apology. As reported at Mirror.co.uk, Kate’s statements (which included: “I’ve heard a lot of rumors about her being a diva over the years and guess what? It’s all true!”) angered Mariah and her team enough that Garraway was forced to take her words back. Said Garraway, “I am really sorry about the furor I caused last week after I wrote in this column about Mariah Carey’s appearance on GMTV. Especially because I am told it has upset the star herself, which is the last thing I intended.”
Does taking back a statement change the facts?
Kate Garraway was adamant about her Mariah Carey diva jokes back when they were issued. It would be one thing if she had said them in private, but the GMTV host wrote them in a column for the public to read. That column in turn got plenty of readers. Why would Garraway write words that the public could read, on a grand scale, if she didn’t feel they were true? In her apology, one could argue that she is still dissing the star, but in a different way. Says Garraway, “Her management have now told me that I got hold of the wrong end of the stick completely and I am still reeling from the massive ticking off my bosses gave me for fueling the rumors that Mariah is unreasonably demanding. Of course a star of Mariah’s magnitude is bound to have a lot of people around her when she appears on a show like GMTV, especially as in this instance she also had a group of backing singers as well – no one would expect anything less. Let’s face it – the world would be a much duller place without people like Mariah, and it’s only because they are such stars that we all love to gossip about them.”
After reading Garraway’s statement, some would surmise that Garraway regrets being discipline by her people, and that she still stands by her statement. No one can prove that Carey is really a diva, but statements given to the public hold a lot of weight.
Why would an outspoken host like Garraway back down?
Mariah Carey is a top star with a lot of clout. Although Kate Garraway is outspoken and brazen, GMTV benefits from the appearances of top American stars. If GMTV expects Mariah Carey to come back to England and visit the show, they knew it would be wise to clean up Garraway’s Mariah Carey diva jokes. One could argue that the damage has already been done despite the fact that Garraway apologized. However, GMTV accomplished what they set out to do – clear the air so that Carey can feel free to return. The ball is in Carey’s court.
