Michael Brewer was burned by bullies in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Michael Brewer was just sitting at a pool when he was doused with alcohol and set onfire. Michael Brewer is currently fighting for his life at a trauma center at the University of Miami, covered by burns on over 65% of his young body.
The argument leading to the burning of Michael Brewer started over owing one of the bullies money. Michael Brewer borrowed money from 15-year-old Matthew Bent to buy a video game. Matthew Bent went on to try to steal Michael Brewer’s father’s custom bike as payment. Michael Brewer turned Matthew Bent in.
Matthew Bent spent the night in a juvenile detention center. Upon his release, Michael Brewer was petrified of revenge and stayed home from school. Matthew Bent then cornered Michael Brewer at his apartment complex’s pool and had him doused with alcohol.
Jesus Mendez, also 15, set Michael Brewer ablaze with a lighter.
Michael Brewer ran and jumped in to a pool, but at that time it was too late. Most of his torso and arms had been burnt, and most of his hair was burned off.
The boys who set Michael Brewer on fire actually laughed when being questioned by police.
If Michael Brewer dies, the four bullies responsible for his death will be charged with murder -not just Jesus Mendez.
The Michael Brewer set on fire incident goes to show you just how corrupt our world has become. When I was a kid, the worst thing one kid would do to another is give them a wedgie or maybe just rough them up a bit. A bloody lip and a black eye was about the worst I ever seen out of boys my age when I was 15.
Now, kids like Michael Brewer are becoming the victims of heinous crimes at the pleasure of sociopath-ic bullies.
You would think that the law would side with Michael Brewer and severely punish the four bullies. Not so. The three bullies exclusive of Jesus Mendez are ordered to spend 21 days in a juvenile detention center. Their attorneys claim that their involvement was “minimal.”
Hopefully Michael Brewer will pull through and live past this horrific experience. Although his life is forever changed, I pray that he has a recovery that will allow him to live a normal life well into his elderly years.
I think that even if the boys aren’t punished severely for setting Michael Brewer on fire, eventually the law will catch up with them. Their heinous act coupled with their ignorant indifference and disregard for human life will most likely lead them down a very criminal path. Eventually somehow, somewhere karma will catch up with them.
