Here are 3 things I learned while looking for my Realtor for my first home purchase on MLK Day. Since home hunting can be a bit much for anyone. In the vein of MLK, I sought excellence in my first home purchase. Martin Luther King once said ” All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” I admire that quote from MLK. I know that MLK later continued to speak to excellence in all efforts.
MLK’s Excellence in efforts
A quote I admire of MLK is “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well”. I admire MLK’s quote of striving for excellence in all we do.
I wanted to find the Michelangelo of Real Estate for my first house. I wanted to find a Realtor that could make a deal happen even on MLK day. I wanted to find a Realtor with a passion for real estate just like I had. I love the process of finding a home, and getting my first home on MLK day was a joy.
MLK Day Lesson Learn
I first thought, that nobody should work on MLK Day. I truly value the concept of the MLK Day Holiday. I appreciated the fact that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a day for celebration. I loved my day off for MLK Day, but strive to make the best use of my MLK Day time. On the days leading up to MLK Day, I found a house. I found my first home for a purchase, but I had no Realtor. So while I valued my time off on MLK Day, I thought surely there must be at least one exception Realtor working.
On this MLK day, I dialed for dollars seekign a Realtor looking to write a contract. I called many of the real estate offices, and was surprised that many of them were closed for the MLK day holiday. As I thought back to the pursuit of excellence, I was not deterred. The irony was that I just wanted a Realtor to write the deal. I wanted a Realtor to simply do what I said and they would get paid. I wanted and excellent Realtor that just listened to me.
MLK Day Blessing
I reached a Realtor that worked for Century 21 in Clinton. I literally picked the phone book up and started calling brokers offices on MLK day. The first few offices, I reached the voice mail on MLK Day. I was not surprised at all that people took MLK day off. When I reached this particular Century 21 office, I spoke to the receptionist. I let her know that this will be the easiest sale any Realtor could make. I let the Realtor know that I have been approved for my loan. I have my house, I just needed a Realtor to write the contract. She responded in disbelief. Then she said I have he perfect Realtor in mind. She turned me over to the agent whom was a blessing.
The Realtor was exceptional and listened to me. I told the agent exactly what to do and she did it. We met that day to sign and submit the contract for the home. I submitted the contract on MLK Day. That same day the other Realtor was working and the owners accepted the contract. By the very next day several other offerers were submitted, but since we had a ratified contract the owners went with my offer though it was $20,000 below the market price.
I sought excellence and found it on MLK Day. I learned that the passionate pursuit of excellence will always result in success. I was thankful for this MLK Day blessing that resulted in my first home.
