Summit Entertainment has apparently figured out that they have the keys to the kingdom, at least where fans of the Stephanie Meyer Twilight Saga are concerned. With The Twilight Saga: New Moon raking in massive grosses at the box office rabid fans will only have to wait another six months for Eclipse to be released into theaters, according to Imdb.com that is June 30, 2010. That means another healthy dose of Bella, Edward, Jacob, and of course the rest of the Cullen clan as well.
WhileKristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner have seemed to adjust to their new found mega stardom rather well. Their ability to carry other movies remains untested. While the Twilight craze has held interest well two movies into the series, Eclipse carries with it a more intense story line that only becomes more amplified in the penultimate chapter of the series with Breaking Dawn.
While Summit Entertainment has, for the most part, kept tried and true to the Stephanie Meyer texts, they have taken a few creative liberties with the books. While those liberties are hardly scandalous as replacing an actress (hello Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria), they do somewhat improve and simplify some of the more complicated aspects of the series’ story lines so that they work better onscreen. The addition of Dakota Fanning in New Moon gave some serious acting chops to the series, and of course Taylor Lautner proved that he could actually handle a major role in a blockbuster. Still the massive success of the movies has to be attributed to the wildly successful books upon which they are based.
Of course, the movies have spawned a life of their own. According to Imdb.com the first installment Twilight clicked in with a world wide box office gross of $351,449,475 and New Moon has already sunk its’ substantial teeth into $572,874,906 as of today, that puts the franchise into some serious company for what is essential a teen vampire romance. In case anyone is keeping score those movies have bested some serious eye candy like the original Xmen movie, I, Robot, Wanted, and several other popular films. That puts Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and company in control of a very profitable film franchise.
Fans of course are what drives any film franchise, and Summit Entertainment obviously intends to strike while the series is hot. Releasing two films so close to each other virtually assures the studio of having a great summer blockbuster to match the incredible fall blockbuster already safely in the cabinet. Look for Eclipse trailers to start popping up very soon.
