The new Off Clip-On personal mosquito repellent seems to be so much in demand, it is hard to find on a store’s shelf. The refills are there and this article is based on the warnings the company put placed on the refills and the web-site: offproducts.com/clip-on-mosquito-repellent/. This information is very worrisome to me and may be to you as well.
Under cautions the following are listed. “Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin”. The problem I have with this is that it can be worn on a person’s belt, on a pocketbook strap or placed on a table where the vapors would be likely breathed in by persons using this device. The vapors could also be absorbed by via skin contact. This seems like something I would not like to have on my person. I would rather get the mosquito bites.
The next warning is “Avoid contact with the skin, eyes or clothing… breathing vapor”. How can this be avoided? I have the same concern as I stated for the previous caution.
Several other cautions are stated. Feel free to read the cautions listed on the device and refill boxes. Animal contact is also listed in the cautions.
The first aid listed after the cautions include “Call a poison-control center or doctor immediately for treatment advice”. This is another red flag to me. Why would a person risk his or her health to keep pests from biting them and causing admittedly itchy bumps on their skin. Most of us grew up being the target of mosquitoes and are none the worse for wear.
The final first aid procedure is “If inhaled move the person to fresh air. If the person is not breathing, call 911 or an ambulance, then give artificial respiration, preferably mouth to mouth if possible.”
Each insert for the Off-Clip on contains 32.1% Metofluthrin, a synthetic solvent developed in China. According to castboolits.gunloads.com this compound is a “very nasty neurotoxicant known to cause all sorts of damage to lab rats resulting in death.” They state that maximum exposure limits have not been determined for children or adults.
Thriftyfun.com has Off Clip-On product user’s comments on the effectiveness of Off Clip-On. There seems to be an almost even divide of commenter who state the product was effective for keeping mosquitoes away or not at all effective in doing this.
I think I’ll wait until more information comes to light before I use this product. I can’t seem to get an Off Clip-On device anyway since all stores that carry the device are sold out and haven’t received their reorders from the warehouse. This in itself is a possible red flag.
