I grew up in upstate New York, and our winters were brutal. I well remember the week long stretches of freezing temperatures that were -40 and even -50 degrees below zero. When I wore long underwear, they were always made of a cotton blend, and weren’t the most comfortable – but they were essential.
Now that I am grown, I live in Alaska with my husband, and I have found a new generation of long underwear! My favorite brand of underwear for the outdoors is Omni-Wool.
My Omni-Wool Insulated Base Layer Women’s Pants are the best! I picked these up at Sam’s Club, and they come in a clear zip-style bag.

I love my Omni-Wool Insulated Base Layer Women’s Pants. The outside of the pants are made of 20% high quality merino wool and 80% polyester. The inside of the pants are made from 100% polyester. They are available in sizes XS, S, M, L, XL, and XXL. An extra small is equivalent to a size 3-4, and an extra large is equivalent to a size 16-18.
I wear a size 8, and the Omni-Wool Insulated Base Layer Women’s Pants in size medium (8-10) fit me perfectly. They are a very tight fit, but that is what you need in long underwear so it doesn’t bunch up under clothing. I am petite, only 5 feet 1 inch tall, and these are slightly too long for me, but the bottoms can be easily snugged up a bit without adding any bulk.
Since I have owned Omni-Wool Insulated Base Layer Women’s Pants, I have experienced almost no pilling on the fabric, and the anti-microbial material cuts down on odors, even after a day of sweating during a cross-country ski excursion. The fabric wicks moisture way from the body to keep it both warm and dry, and these long underwear dry much faster than a pair of cotton long Johns do.
The seams are constructed with a flatlock stitch, which gives the garment extra strength in the seams, and again less bulk. Caring for a pair of Omni-Wool Insulated Base Layer Women’s is easy, as you can wash them in a washing machine, then tumble dry. They have not shrunk up on me yet either, so they are indeed well made!
In comparing Omni-Wool Insulated Base Layer Women’s Pants to long underwear made out of silk, I can say that the Omni-Wool keeps me as warm as silk does, and although they are soft, they aren’t quite as soft as silk. Pants also slide on easier over silk than the Omni-Wool – BUT Omni-Wool is much cheaper, so there are pros and cons.
Sam’s Club is the only store where I have found Omni-Wool, and I hope they are still selling this product now so I can get a second pair for the brutally cold winter days ahead. They are a great pair of long underwear.
