Apartment kitchens are usually small, and you are unable to do permanent changes. Some people tend to get frustrated with the small kitchens, I have many times. There are ways to maximize the space, and most items do not take a lot of money.
Start by sitting in your kitchen. Just take a chair, and sit with a pad of paper. Think about where your items are located. Is everything in places that are functional? A functional kitchen makes the area more convenient, and easier to use. To you, the kitchen will feel larger.
Now you need to note spaces that you do not use. Most kitchens have empty spaces somewhere. Like above the cabinets. These spaces can be used for storage. I use them for my wine glasses, vases, and large bowels. Find items that can be stored, and will also double as decorations. Doing this will free up some much needed cabinet space.
Clean all of your cabinets out, and get rid of any unnecessary items. Work one cabinet at a time. Be realistic with your items. Do you have small appliances, cookware, containers, or dishes that you do not use? If so, donate or sell them. You are working with a small space, and these items are unnecessary.
Categorize all of your items. All of your seasonings, canned foods, cookware, utensils, dishes, and containers should be separated. This will help you determine how to organize your items, and keep them organized. You will be able to see exactly what you have, and what you need that will help with this process.
Before storing your items, clean the cabinets. Wipe cabinet doors, and shelves clean. You want to have a clean area to work with. If you are thinking of adding storage items, measure for them. You need the measurements to be sure that the items will fit. Just take a few different measurements, so you will have a reference point when shopping.
If you do not have a pant, you may want to do something creative. I have found that using plastic storage containers for all boxed or bagged foods. They will keep your items fresh, and can be stacked or organized differently. You may even want to add canisters to your counter top. You can store flour, sugar, noodles, or rice in these. You use these items regularly, so it will be convenient.
Countertops can double as storage. You do not want to over do the countertops, but simple items can add a decorative feel. Use a tall pitcher or canister to store large utensils on the counter. Purchase a small basket and organize your towels. Place them on the counter. Both of these items can be functional, and decorative.
Items that you can purchase to maximize space:
-Wire racks that can hang from cabinet doors.
-Wire shelves that can be mounted to doors. Use for spices, canned foods, or other items.
-Drawer organizers will increase drawer space.
-Mounted under cabinet items. (Small appliances or storage)
-Small plastic drawer unit. You can store recipes, coupons, or other items with convenience.
-Shelving units-Small units can be placed under the sink, or can double cabinet space for canned foods.
-Small S hooks can be used to hang pots, pans, or cleaning items.
Maximizing your apartments kitchen can take a little creativity, and time. For inspiration, go to your local container store. You can also go to a local hardware store. They have cabinet displays that may help with your plan.
When doing this, think of what you want. You will be the one using the kitchen, so it should fit your needs. Think of what you do in your kitchen, and place things where it will make your day easier. You want to maximize your space, and have a functional kitchen.
