Paula Abdul seems to have bounced back from her American Idol departure. She is set to host this year’s Vh1 Divas special on September 17.
As Paula Abdul posted on her Twitter page, “Hi guys! im really excited 2 announce ill b hosting this year’s “Vh1 Divas”! The show will be live on Sept 17th @ 9 pm EST.”
According to MTV News, the Vh1 Divas special will feature performances by Leona Lewis, Miley Cyrus, and American Idol winners Kelly Clarkson and Jordin Sparks. Vh1 Divas returns with fresh-faces after a four-year hiatus. Previous performers from the show have included Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, Cher, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, and Beyonce. While I don’t necessarily think of Miley Cyrus or Jordin Sparks as “divas,” it should be a promising line-up.
Paula Abdul to host Vh1 Divas: Post-Idol Options
While I was disappointed about Paula Abdul’s departure from American Idol, I couldn’t blame her for leaving. It seemed a bit unfair that Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell were getting paid so much more than she was. Paula Abdul was arguably the most famous of the judges. She was, after all, the only one from the American Idol franchise who was a household name before the show began.
Paula Abdul recently entertained ideas of guest-starring on Ugly Betty, but talks fell through. ABC also expressed interest in having her participate on Dancing With the Stars, but that fell through as well. I’m actually not surprised. Paula Abdul may not be the best match for the show. As an amateur contestant, she would be overqualified because of her dance background. However, as a professional she would be stepping out of her genre, as she’s not a ballroom dancer.
According to MTV News, Paula Abdul may still have a future with ABC in spite of failed negotiations with Dancing With the Stars. ABC has expressed interest in developing a talent show centered around Abdul. Still, I have to wonder if such a show would survive, as the television market is already over-saturated with talent shows.
There is also the possibility of Paula Abdul’s participation on So You Think You Can Dance. Nigel Lythgoe is a long-time admirer of her work and has expressed interest in having her on the show in some capacity. As of now, there is no word on how negotiations have progressed with So You Think You Can Dance.
While I would love to see Paula Abdul on a dance show (such as SYTYCD), hosting Vh1 Divas is a step in the right direction for her, as it sows that she is not without options.
