An Elf comes out the day after Thanksgiving:
My parents always put an Elf out somewhere in the house when my brother and I were kids and this Elf was Santa’s helper that watched us to make sure that we did not misbehave. My mother gave me the Elf when I had my first daughter. I put the Elf out every year Thanksgiving night after the kids have gone to bed and I place it in a different place every year as well. The kids wake up, the day after Thanksgiving, just as my brother and I did, and look for the Elf.
The house is decorated Thanksgiving weekend:
I have to have the house decorated Thanksgiving weekend. All of it is done that Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I think more likes and decorations go up every year as well.
My kids always get a new calendar for Christmas:
My parents always got my brother and I a new calendar every year and my kids get one too. Sometimes my parents still buy one for me and each of my four children, as well as my ex. Other years I have bought them. But, they like starting the year with a brand new calendar.
I have a wooden house that I burn incense in:
I have a little wooden house, just like my mom has, and it burns incense in it that has a holiday scent to it. It’s a very small house and there are little wooden cones that you light to burn. It is very simple, but it makes the entire house smell like what I think of Christmas.
I have to listen to A Christmas Together with the Muppets and John Denver:
I love this album and my parents always played it when I was a kid when we would decorate the house and then play it throughout the holiday season as well. I adore the Muppets and John Denver and this album is so much fun to listen too. My favorite song is by Miss Piggy and it is Christmas is Coming.
The kids get to open one gift Christmas Eve:
My kids open one gift on Christmas Eve and it is their Christmas Day pajamas. They are different every year and this is something that parents did with my brother and I also. My ex and I still get each other Christmas pajamas as well, so that we have something to open and can still participate with the kids. Plus we both like our Christmas Day pajamas too.
The family receives one new board game for Christmas:
The family always gets one new board game to play together with every year. My parents did this for me and my brother every year until we were teenagers and I have been doing it with my kids as well.
The Elf is gone on Christmas Day:
The Elf that came out the day after Thanksgiving, gets put away on Christmas Eve after the kids have gone to bed. I will probably keep doing this tradition even when they all grow up and no longer believe in Santa.
We look at Christmas lights a few days before Christmas:
I have to drive around with all my kids and look at Christmas lights. We don’t just visit our side of town, but we drive all over Las Vegas to see them. It’s cold and I love looking at lights and seeing what everyone else has done.
