Even though I usually make my own hamburger patties and freeze them, I couldn’t resist trying out the Philly Gourmet 100% Pure Beef Homestyle Patties when they were on sale for $4.00. Each box weighs two pounds and contains eight quarter pound burgers. The ground beef I usually buy is about $1.99 a pound so this costs the same but the burgers are already prepared and ready to cook. They are frozen with pieces of wax paper between them so they are easy to separate and you can pan fry them or cook them on the grill.
The meat used in the Philly Gourmet 100% Pure Beef Patties is USDA inspected and approved; to me this is an important factor when purchasing frozen meats like this. The ingredient list is simple, it’s 100% beef with no fillers. The meat, however, can come from Australia, New Zealand, Canada or Mexico so if you have concerns with getting meat products from those places you may want to skip this. Philly Gourmet offer a money back guarantee that you will be satisfied with this product or they will refund your purchase price. Details on that can be found on the back of the box.
I have cooked these in a frying pan, on the grill and in the broiler of my oven and they tasted great. There isn’t a lot of grease that comes off of them so you won’t get a flare up when you are cooking on the grill. The patties do not shrink up either; they are a little larger than your average hamburger bun but that isn’t a big deal. The taste is a lot better than what I expected; it has an actual taste to it. Some of the frozen burger patties are completely tasteless and have so many fillers in them that you have to wonder how much meat there really is in it. Whether you serve them plain or with tons of condiments, these have a great taste to them and they cook evenly regardless of how you are preparing them.
The only downside to the Philly Gourmet Beef Patties is that they are plain; there is nothing added to them so they can be a little on the boring side if you usually add breadcrumbs, eggs and cheese to your hamburgers. I love the way that they taste and that there isn’t a lot of grease that comes off the burgers when you are cooking them. The normal selling price is about $4.99 a box so I plan on stocking up on them while they are on sale for times when I want a burger but don’t want to have to buy five pounds of meat.
